Product Description

Review

PR consultant Maggie White has a problem. It's not her nightmare commute, the difficult tampon launch or the fact that her marriage is on the rocks. No, Maggie's real problem is that St. Peter is visiting her in the bedroom every night...and he looks like Sean Connery. He's got a PR problem or, more accurately, Jesus does. Now it's Maggie's problem, too. Outrageously funny and unashamedly hopeful, The Saint Who Loved Me is a dazzling, compassionate and intelligent look at the modern world and how we live in it.

The Bookseller, June 2002

Satirical and original, I must recommend it as clever, thought-provoking and very special indeed.

This book is quite simply a joy to read from start to finish. The kinetic first chapter introduces Maggie White and her insanely busy life. Juggling her hectic work schedule (promoting a new tampon) and her desperate attempts to save her marriage, Maggie has a new problem to deal with: visitations from Saint Peter.

Thebo seamlessly fuses together a light-hearted tone with moments of introspection to make this book funny (often hilarious) and sensitive in equal measures. And even a little shocking... With the daytime scenes written in almost note form, there is a great sense of energy, which brilliantly captures the sense of a life running at full tilt.

The characters are also acutely observed. The Maggie / 'Rock' scenes are delightful - you can really feel her confusion and frustration turning into deep friendship. The relationship between Maggie and her husband Simon is also very believable and at times deeply moving.

But this is a book which never makes the mistake of taking itself too seriously. The brilliant drunk scene is particularly amusing, and the bizarre but touching relationship between Maggie and Saint Peter is one that you will remember long after you reach the last page. Despite the fears and anxieties of the ending, this book has a message of hope that will leave you with a warm glow and will make you want to read more.

In short, this is a fantastically written book. I can't wait for her second novel...

This book is a very good one. I read it in a few days, unable to leave it alone for long. Often funny, always thought provoking, I really enjoyed this book. The protagonist was more than believable, sometimes painful, to read. Loved Cat. I can't believe the other reviewer found it boring. Even if it isn't your genre, it was never boring. So subtle, and so real, you felt you were in a conversation with the main character. I even wanted to give her husband a smack myself. Well done.

OK - Passes the time 18 Feb 2004
By Mrs. A. C. Whiteley VINE™ VOICE
Meet Maggie White: rat-race victim, mother wannabe and, perhaps, soon to be ex-wife of Simon White. Just as her marriage hits the rocks, however, she meets the Rock, or St Peter as he is more commonly known, who appears nightly in her bedroom in the guise of Sean Connery. He, or rather, his Master, is in a spot of bother image-wise, and only Maggie’s exceptional PR skills can save the day. He gives her a rather different version of events from that of the Gospels, and is anxious to dispel the ‘myths’ perpetuated by Paul – debunking the resurrection along the way. If this sort of thing offends you, I would recommend that you give this book a miss. Through Peter, too, she gradually comes to realise what’s really important in her life.

On the whole, however, this is an amusing well written novel, with plenty of surprises on the way. It has a lot of potential for being even better, however, so one hopes that Ms Thebo can build on this in her subsequent publications. It reads compulsively enough, so I would recommend this if you are in the mood for a little light, slightly irreverant and a little fantastic (in the sense of fantasy) reading. Worth a look.
