3.0 out of 5 stars The Sailors Return 28 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I bought the book because my mother had told me about the artists colony in the tiny village of Chaldon, South Dorset in the 1930s. The book was based on the village and as I know it well and often went to the pub in the 1960s, I was able to follow the story round the village.

Now I want to find a copy of the film - it would be a good story for an independent film maker to re-make.

5.0 out of 5 stars A strange, sad, little tale. 14 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd always wondered where this story came from since seeing it on television a few years ago. It caught my imagination then, I particularly remembered the scene where the girl sees off the bull that the villagers set on her, and it took the magic of an Amazon search for me to find it as a book. I wasn't disappointed; the story is very much of it's time but shows a tolerance and compassion that must have been unusual then. A great piece of story telling; both depressing and uplifting.
