Samantha Laschen, a doctor specialising in post-traumatic stress disorder, has moved to the Essex coast with her small daughter, Elsie, to escape the problems of her London life. Or so she thinks. Fiona Mackenzie barely survived the savage, murderous attack which left her parents dead. Now she is in need of sanctuary and the police see Sam as the ideal person to offer her a safe house. But as Fiona makes her way into the hearts of her hosts, Sam discovers that the risks she has foreseen are nothing to the terrifying danger she actually faces . . .

This was the first book of Nicci French's that I have read. Starts slowly, but builds up to a "can't put it down" pace, which leads up to a very surprising climax. As someone who is more accustomed to male oriented plots, which can become cliched and stale, I found this plot, which is very much from the feminine perspective, especially the climax, a refreshing change. Suffice to say it was enough for me to order more Nicci French books from Amazon. Psychological thriller is exactly the right term for this book.

I read 'The Safe House' because I'd already enjoyed 'The Memory Game' and that style of psychological thriller which is so hard to find these days. The plot was gripping and only giving away enough clues to harbour a terrible suspicion about the shape of things to come, but never cliched. I couldn't put it down and was only slightly disappointed with the ending, a sort of conclusive chapter to wrap up the story after its grand finale - it seemed like an easy option but perhaps that is the key to the Nicci French school: no sensationalism, just the feeling that terror hides in the most normal situations. Read it.

Whenever I'm in the mood for a good mystery/psychological thriller, Nicci French comes to mind. Having read Killing Me Softly and Beneath the Skin, the two Nicci French books released in the US, I had to read her other books. I marvel at this incredibly well crafted piece of work. French leaves you in a state of intense turmoil until the last page. The last words in the book are thought provoking and chilling to the core. Sam, a doctor whose level of expertise is in Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome, is faced with the choice of allowing the victim of a savage attack that left her parents dead stay at her house. Apparently, the young woman will be safe there. Or will she? The book will keep you turning the pages until its surprising conclusion. I recommend this book most highly.

Good thriller
The basic premise for this novel is that a doctor specialising in psychological trauma takes in, against her will, a child traumatised by her parents' deaths. Read more

OK but a bit disappointing at the end
I agree with a previous reviewer that the plot of this book is a little unlikely to say the least. It left too many unanswered questions at the end for me. Read more
