Product Description

Steele City, 2012: A sadistic killer is on the loose; intent on eliminating “the undesirables” of society. Sure, it may not be the first time a deluded psychopath has assumed the responsibility; but rarely has one demonstrated such a chilling aptitude for the role.

Detective Frank Blaylock – a man with old-school values, but a new-school approach – has been assigned to the case, and soon becomes utterly consumed with the task of apprehending the would-be vigilante. Sleeping with one eye open, he stops at nothing in his quest; going to increasingly extreme lengths to nail his quarry, even to the point of putting his own family in jeopardy.

However, author Mark Wooley weaves a blood-curdling twist to his crimson thread when the identity of the killer is eventually revealed; a revelation so shocking, the lives of all involved are sure to be changed forever…

1.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment.... 23 Jan 2013

I read the reviews for this book, which praised it no end, before purchasing and I looked forward to a easy who-dunnit style read. Imagine my horror when it turned out to be total rubbish. Badly written and full of waffling sub plots. The two cops trying to solve the case are clearly the worst policemen ever and by the time I got half way through, there was no indication about who the suspects might be and I really couldn't care less who the murderer was. I've ditched it now before getting to the end, I may go back to it but it seems unlikely.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great Crime Thriller 14 Feb 2013
By Jane
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a real crime thriller fan and found The Smack a largely enjoyable read. I liked it, but it didn't overwhelm me.

The main character, Detective Frank Blaylock, is somewhat reminiscent of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch, in as much as he was portrayed as a tough, seasoned and cynical cop with a heart. This contrasted well with his partner, the immaculate Detective Keith Wyman. I found Blaylock's initial reluctance to work with Wyman, followed by his fair-minded approach to Wyman's background story (which I won't spoil here) believable and was glad, as without it, Blaylock would have been pretty one dimensional.

The plot was good and moved along at a reasonable pace with some interesting twists and turns and it left me guessing for the majority of the book. There were also some good moments of humour, which I always enjoy in books of this genre.

However, I found the writing lacked some of the fine tuning that is the hallmark of other writers such as Connelly and Coben and I will be honest here and say I may have been spoiled by reading them. Wooley's style is not as punchy as I would like and a little too "anecdotal" and descriptive in places.

Also, I am not sure if this was a glitch owing to it being on Kindle, but I found little distinction between the main plot and the scenes with the killer and this was a bit irritating at times. By this I mean that it didn't have a small gap, or italics, to show it was switching scene, it just continued straight on in a normal paragraph and this spoiled it a little, as you got a few lines down and then realised it had switched. There were also quite a lot of minor errors missed in proof reading.
