Product Description

Product Description

Almost all computers, including PCs, workstations and mainframes, are equipped with a SCSI interface. The SCSI Bus is designed to connect hard drives, tape drives, CD-ROMs, scanners and printers to any type of computer, while the IDE hard disk interface is found almost exclusively in the world of IBM PC compatibles.

Outside the ANSI standard documentation, little additional information was available about this specification until The SCSI Bus and IDE Interface was first published. This fully expanded and updated second edition continues to provide an accessible description of both SCSI and IDE interfaces, including an explanation of essential terminology together with a breakdown of the commands and protocols. The book acts as a tutor to SCSI and IDE and an invaluable guide to the ANSI literature.

Key aspects of the book:

  • Description of peripheral core technologies and device model
  • Detailed descriptions of SCSI and IDE, including the physical and logical interfaces, command sets and a summary of the essential terminolog
  • Thorough cross-referencing to the previously impenetrable ANSI documentatio
  • A practical chapter on testing SCSI targets
    Features new to this edition:

  • All SCSI material has been adapted and updated to reflect the new SCSI-3 standard documentatio
  • A new chapter on SCSI-3 Serial interface
  • A fully updated disk containing the source code for the program examples and a SCSI monitor tool for testing and troubleshooting SCSI devices

All right, so you can search under your bonnet until the cows come home. Yet no such thing exists. But one time you needed them. And you stuck them on your engine. But did you really know how they work?

The SCSI Bus and IDE Interface, are the carburetors of the computer world. Sure, you put them in computers. But to you really know how they worked? Well this here book has everything you ever wanted to now about those interfaces. It also contains a SCSI monitor tool together with the complete example source code on disk.

Format:Paperback
i was looking for an overview of ide compared to scsi buses , but was dissapointed with this book as it was mainly designed for people writing protocols etc for these devices, and not people who merely use the devices, and would like a little more knowledge

Grand Mom's IDE and SCSI? 5 May 2000
By Gabriel Shih - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Because of the rapidly revised specification and tons of legacy issues, it's not easy for a book to cover the latest technologies as well as the former ones. This book isn't quite up to date especially in IDE. If you want to know what is UDMA or Tailgate, they are not in this book.

For a beginner that is about to implement devices or program drivers, this book should be a good entry, but not enough. If you have already know how hard drives work, save your money and download the newest spec.

SCSI Based Reference only 17 July 2002
By T. Fitzpatrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is mainly a reference for the SCSI Interested professional. It will not cover the IDE interface in as much detail as you would like. If you think you will be speaking specifically to a hard drive via code, you will have to memorize interrupt values, AND pay very close attention to the protocol information. This book isn't quite what you think, nor was it what i expected. Although an informative reference for basic SCSI devices, i'm still searching for one that will help me program for hard disks. Hope this was helpful.
What is the carburetor? 25 Dec 2000
By bernie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
All right, so you can search under your bonnet until the cows come home. Yet no such thing exists. Vehicle technology has surpassed the carburetor, but one time you needed them. And you stuck them on your engine. But did you really know how they work?

The SCSI Bus and IDE Interface are the carburetors of the computer world. Sure, you put them in computers. But to you really know how they worked? Well this here book has everything you ever wanted to now about those interfaces. It also contains a SCSI monitor tool together with the complete example source code on disk. SCSI has advanced to specialize in ever larger disk arrays. The simple one that was used in your PC is no longer or very hard to find. But it can not hurt to know what they are and how they work as being computer literate.
