Book Description

27 April 2005 0761927573 978-0761927570 Third Edition
Once again, editors Norman K Denzin and Yvonna S Lincoln have put together a volume that represents the state of the art for the theory and practice of qualitative inquiry. Built on the considerable foundations of the landmark first (1994) and second editions (2000) the Third Edition moves qualitative research boldly into the 21st century. The editors and authors ask how the practices of qualitative inquiry can be used to address issues of social justice in this new century.

As with the second edition, the Third Edition represents virtually a new handbook. There are 14 totally new topics, including, among others, indigenous research, institutional review boards and human subject research, critical and performance ethnography, arts-based inquiry, narrative inquiry, Foucault, the ethics and strategies of on-line research, cultural and investigative poetics, the politics of evaluation. Over half of the 42 chapters are written by new authors. Every returning chapter has been thoroughly revised and updated. The organization is clear and sensible, moving from the general to the specific and from the past to the present and the future.

The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research is far-reaching and comprehensive, featuring a virtual `Who's Who' in the human sciences. It is absolutely an essential text for the library of any academic interested in the art, science and practice of qualitative research.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you will ever need 2 May 2009
The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research
Comprehensive and wide ranging with thorough well edited articles. This will support the professional qualitative researcher for years as well as guiding students up to and through master and doctoral levels. The wide range of material allows the researcher to compare and understand alternative approaches and schools of thought and practice all in one albeit very large volume. However this handbook is a great investment with a very long shelf life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for PhD students 28 Jun 2010
Starting postgraduate study can be daunting and the last thing you need is a text that either bores you to death or sends you down the proverbial garden path. The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research does neither; this tome is easy to read, has an easy and logical structure and provides a lot of good solid information. This text is in high demand at my university and so I took the risk and bought my own copy and have not regretted the purchase in any way. At 2.3 kilos in weight it is not easy to carry around but is definitely worth its weight in information. Certainly I would recommend this to potential post grad. students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A reference priority 25 Jun 2014

This book is so hefty - 1126 pages plus indexes and author infiormation - that it could be used as a door stop. It is an unavaoidable book to refer to if you are addressing methodology in qualitative research. It's longevity proves its essential nature. I could not afford the most up-to-date edition but had previously owned the second edition and expect this t o be as helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review 5 Nov 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have read a few chapters now and although the language used can be difficult it has help my understanding of the various topics. I have been told that a publication published over 10 years ago is considered old, so maybe you should consider the newer version.
