'Wonderful ... a gripping love story ... The wonderfully drawn and all-too-human characters struggle to survive in a world of danger and bewildering change, constantly choosing whether to embrace the past or to escape it, caught between cultures, ideologies - and the growing realization that only the frail reed of love is strong enough to withstand the destroying winds of time' Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series ** 'I won't fill my precious space with a mass of superlatives, but suffice to say this is my pick of the month ... Great! 14 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
This is an amazingly gripping story. Set in China 1928, it swept me up in the intricate and surprising plot, at the same time entrancing me with the strong and vibrant characters. I couldn't put it down. The period of history is brilliantly portrayed with all its sights and smells - I was right there in Junchow with them. Kate Furnivall's gift for description and detail is remarkable. I loved the book so much I read it twice - something I've never done before -and I can't wait for her next book.

Truly speechless. This book as left me reeling with satisfaction. Kate Furnivall has written an epic masterpiece. I cannot describe how wonderful this book is. It will take pride of place on my bookshelf.

The historic Chinese culture is nothing I knew about - and quite frankly had never appealed to me before. I almost picked this book up by accident. It was an offer of buy 3 for 2 at Waterstones and it was the only reason why i bought it and I must say It's the BEST thing I have done in a long time. I learnt so much about not only China and it's culture and political history - but I felt a sense of realisation of love and loyalty. Astounding!!

Outstanding! 14 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
Kate Furnivall has written an outstanding novel in The Russian Concubine. It blew me away. The historical fiction is based on the author's mother's life as a White Russian refugee in China after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and she brings to it a power and intensity that drew me in and wouldn't let me go.

I devoured the book in a mere two days. I experienced every moment of the suffering and joy of the intimately drawn characters, going through every emotion with the superb Lydia each step of the way. The love-story is powerful but never cheesy, and I now feel I have a much deeper understanding of that period of China out of which Communism grew, in a way I never did before.

Kate Furnivall has an exceptional narrative voice and I will certainly be reading her next book.

Very misleading title
I expected this book to be about a Russian Concubine and it was nothing of the sort. A better title would be Searching for my Chinese Lover. Read more
