I love Ms Hiatt's Scandalous Virtue. I ordered this book with similar expectation of an excellent historical romance read. I was so...so wrong. I couldn't write a detail review regarding this story as I have stopped reading at Chapter 3. To sum up what had put me off are bascially boring storyline and even harder going dialogue. It is difficult to see how this book was written by the same author who wrote such a wonderful book as Scandalous Virtue. Really sad!

Dina Moore's only chance to claim her rightful inheritance from her scheming brother is to wed before she's 25. But when her intended ditches her two days before her birthday, she decides to take her chances of finding a husband in Gretna Green. Her plans go awry however, when instead of finding a husband she saves a naïve young woman from the clutches of a fortune hunter and earns the gratitude of the lady's handsome brother.

Grant Turpin owes the beautiful stranger a debt of gratitude for saving his sister but he did not anticipate that Dina would request his hand in marriage as a reward. And he certainly didn't anticipate that he would find his new wife so attractive, or that with every bit more independence that Dina offers him - the less he desires to take it.

This was my first novel by Brenda Hiatt and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. Both Dina and Grant, or Thor as he's known to his friends, along with the large cast of supporting characters were all well developed and extremely likeable.

The storyline was fast moving, interesting and kept the pages turning. While possibly not the most original of storylines - there were enough unique plot points to keep it from being clichéd or dull.

There were, however, a few things that stopped the book from getting 5 stars in my opinion. Dina was written as a small woman and Thor as a large man and the more intimate aspects of marriage were a source of conflict within the book. However, despite this raised anticipation - the sex scenes really lacked sizzle which was a little disappointing.

There were also a few oddities within the book that while maybe not historically inaccurate - did seem slightly out of place in a Regency set novel. Dina's love of exercise and callisthenics and Thor not having a house of his own and living with his parents were two things that struck me as odd. But although unusual - neither changed what is essentially a very enjoyable read and one that I would recommend if you're looking for a little light entertainment. I will definitely be looking out for more of Brenda Hiatt's books in the future.

A great read 13 Jun 2005
By Angela Wood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I found that the book had several events that made the book entertaining. Dina is a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. Dina takes her life in her hands, well her inheritance, by having to get married within a matter of days or her gambling brother will take her inheritance and use it towards his huge debt. Grant, known as Thor, comes to Gretna Green to rescue his young, naive sister from eloping to a fortune hunter. Prior to Grant's arrival, Dina helps his sister from marrying the fortune hunter. In reward, since Dina needs a husband right away, she ask Grant to be her husband. Grant tries to help her find another solution, when that couldn't be done, he agreed to marrying her. Grant is attracted to Dina however due to her small frame, he's afraid of crushing her due to his strong, bigger frame. Dina tries her best to prove him wrong.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has read any of Brenda Hiatt's books, if you haven't read any of her books, you should start!

Good but not the best. 28 July 2005
By J. Brennan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
For me I had trouble truly getting into this couple Thor and Dina. I am not sure if it was the fact that Thor was not a notorious rake like so many of the heros in these books. But his romantic ideas were a bit awkward at best. And Dina the country miss that did not seem to have any true interests other than keeping physically fit - well that was a new one for that era. But her being a tad naive and Thor being not the big rogue proved for a very low level of sizzle to be sure. Then there was the problem that she was so petite and he was so large and that seemed to truly bother and worry Thor. I could not quite gather how big he was - and how small she was but never had that been such a worry in any other book. They certainly met under very odd circumstances, Dina in Scotland with 24 hrs to wed before she looses control of her inheritance and Grant in Scotland to keep his warward sister from marrying a fortune hunter. So the end result was Dina and Grant (Thor) marry. Obviously this is not the beginning of a great love match but many books have similar basis for the marriage and have a little more sizzle to what might lead up to lust or love. On the whole it was not a bad book - I finished it with no problem. But I would not say it was a real page turner or feel compelled to reread it. This was a decent book from an author that usually does a better job, especially with bedroom scenes!!

fabulous regency 25 May 2005
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In 1816 England, Dina Moore meets her fiancé Diggory Tallow so that they can elope to Gretna Green. In four days Dina turns twenty-five and fears the loss of her trust fund as her late father's will stipulated that if she remained unmarried by that birthday her brother Silas will mange her money. Silas has wasted a fortune gambling. Diggory tells Dina that they will not elope so she travels to Gretna Green alone.

Grant "Thor" Turpin learns that his sister Violet eloped with a fortune hunter Gregory. In Gretna Green Dina meets Violet and Gregory; she realizes the man is a fortune hunter. The next morning Violet breaks off with Gregory when a screaming Thor arrives. Gregory flees and Violet explains all. Thor tells Dina he owes her so she says marry her. Dina explains her reasons; Thor agrees as he feels honor calls for it. They marry although they know nothing about one another. Soon they begin to fall in love while their siblings directly or indirectly cause problems.

Dina is a terrific and unique heroine for the era as she works out with weights and a boxing bag though the audience will wonder why she waited so long to escape from Silas. Thor is her perfect partner though neither realize it when they first meet; that makes for a fine tale as they discover one another. Silas displays no honor as he mistreated his sister who he was supposed to protect and Violet's judge of men seems too naive for an obviously intelligent person. Still the lead couple make for a fabulous regency as they bring freshness to the sub-genre.
