Book Description

21 Jun 2006 Wheeler Softcover
In a world nearly identical to ours, the North won the Civil War, Ben Affleck is the sexiest man alive, and Russia never sold Alaska to the U.S. Instead, Alaska is a rough, beautiful country ruled by a famously eccentric royal family, and urgently in need of a bride for the Crown Prince. But they have no idea what they're in for when they offer the job to a feisty commoner

4.0 out of 5 stars Seriously funny 23 Aug 2004
Format:Paperback
This is a laugh out loud book (if it's your kind of humour, a lot of sarcasm) , so be careful where you read it!

In a world identical to ours except Alaska was not sold to the US and now has an eccentric royal family.
The King stumbles across our heroine Christina (a commoner from the US) and thinks she would make a perfect wife for his son jewellery designing marine biologist Crown Prince David. David once pried away from his precious imported penguins is surprised in that he agrees with his father and a wedding is planned. Edmund (very droll) his majesties right hand man and Jenny protocol officer have to help Christina become a princess (who is finding being a princess is harder than it looks) and help her plan the wedding. Christina and David find the only time for privacy is in one of the many palace closets!
After the wedding Christina finds royal life is anything but dull - I will not spoil too much of the plot...

The only thing that got me apart from the fact that Christina is loved by everyone was that there is not much depth to the characters or plot, however the supporting cast and the sheer funniness of the book makes up for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where's the plot? Where's the story? 26 Nov 2007
By Rena Ruadh VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This, I am sorry to say, is one of the most boring books I have ever had the misfortune to read. I had to force myself to finish it and found myself skimming pages. While I love Ms Davidson's vampire books, this book, at least to me, had no plot, no storyline, and was just too unbelievable. OK, no problem with a fictitious Kingdom of Alaska. No problem with a quirky, mad Royal Family. But when the plot consists simply of the heroine stumbling over the king during one of his fishing trips, moving into the palace where the crown prince is told to marry her and complies just like that, no falling in love or anything like this, and the heroine agreeing just like that, too --- no, sorry, just a bit too silly and ridiculous for my taste. I love funny books, but this went beyond funny and became embarrassing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not my cup of tea 12 Feb 2009

In an alternate world, the King of Alaska is determined to see his oldest son and heir, David, married and settled. While he is out on a fishing excursion he meets American chef Christina Crabbe and decides that she is perfect princess material so takes her home to the palace to meet David.

David doesn't really care who he marries so long as he can continue his work with his beloved penguins but he can't help but be charmed by the unusual, feisty commoner, Christina. Soon the pair are engaged but it will take a lot of work to turn Christina into the perfect princess.

I really liked the premise for this book of an alternate world where Alaska became an independent country rather than part of the USA and had its own quirky, eccentric royal family. Unfortunately for me, the actual book didn't live up to my expectations.

The worst thing about the book was the heroine, Christina. She was supposed to be feisty but I just didn't find her likeable at all. She was cocky, sarcastic and ridiculously foul-mouthed yet everyone around her seemed to think she was the best thing since sliced bread. I just didn't get it. The other characters were slightly better but we didn't go deep enough to really like any of them.

Because of the lack of depth, the romance also fell flat and the sex scenes were such a disappointment with not a bit of chemistry between the characters.

This is probably a personal thing but I didn't even crack a smile while reading and there was no humour at all in the book, in my opinion.

Overall, I really didn't like this book. Having said that, it was my first book by Mary Janice Davidson so perhaps fans of hers might enjoy this more than I did. Only 1 star.
