Product Description

Episode 1: First Impressions
The Royal is, in the 1960s, the local hospital for the North Yorkshire town of Elsinby. Its administrator T.J. Middleditch is a benevolent figure whilst the elderly matron is firm but fair with her nursing staff. Surgeon Mr. Rose is likely to light up his pipe whilst performing an operation and Dr. Jill Wetherill is a highly confident practitioner though she does come unstuck on a home visit and Ken the hospital porter comes a cropper trying to fit an aerial on the roof. Young doctor David Cheriton turns up for his first day at the Royal and is surprised not only at how ill-equipped it seems to be but because noone was expecting him so early.

Episode 2: Second Time Around
A motor-bike crash brings a cruel end to a romantic escapade for a young couple but elsewhere Matron assists Dr. Ormerod in bringing marital harmony to patient Brian Lynson and his wife. The porters have to deal with a rodent infestation problem and unwisely turn to patient, Aidensfield wheeler-dealer Claude Greengrass for advice, though he keeps hallucinating that spiders are crawling all over him.

Episode 3: Coffin Fit
Jill Wetherill comes to learn the folly of jumping to the wrong conclusion after she suspects that older Dr. Alway has misdiagnosed a patient. David Cheriton proves himself at a car accident despite Dr. Ormerod's fears that he may have been affected by an earlier crash and Greengrass arouses the porters' suspicions after asking them to store a coffin, supposedly containing his late sister, in the hospital.

Episode 4: Sister of Mercy
Jill Wetherill helps the Heatons, an elderly couple, whilst Sister Brigid,a secular Irish nun working as a nurse at the Royal, discovers an abandoned baby which she believes is linked to missing teenager Susan. Whilst a Russian sailor is admitted to the Royal Greengrass attempts to play the system to ensure a longer stay for himself, whilst an official hospital inspection looms.

Episode 5: Immediate Care
David Cheriton is faced with the unenviable task of telling young Francesca that she has only a short time to live, though it does lead to a wedding. Efficiency-mad Nigel Harper ruffles feathers with cost-cutting ideas but the arrival of a famous jockey as a patient in the hospital means that the basic fund-raising scheme of having a raffle to help hospital coffers gives way, thanks to Greengrass, to having a flutter on the horses.

Episode 6: Kiss and Tell
Aidensfield copper Ventress comes to the Royal for a bunion removal and sees a supposed amnesiac, who is not what he claims. Doctors Wetherill and Ormerod get close at Cheriton's house-warming but Middleditch is faced with the news that the hospital may be forced to close and dreads having to tell the staff.

Episode 7: Crash
It's Dr. Alway's last day at the Royal before retirement but he,and the rest of the staff, are kept busy, following a bus crash, one of the wounded being Dr. Ormerod's wife Caroline. Whilst Cheriton gets cosy with Staff Nurse Taylor, Bernard Hussey, the NHS administrator, gets in everyone's way and Greengrass is re-admitted, apparently suffering from malaria.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! What we have all been waiting for . . . 11 Oct 2011
Format:DVD
The Royal on DVD! This is a must have for anyone who likes decent, well written drama with twists and turns along the way. The stand out performances come from Michelle Hopkirk as Lizzie and Andy Wear as Alun Morris - both bring lots of humor to each episode and epitomize the fashion of the swinging 60s! There's even cameo appearances from Tricia Penrose, David Lonsdale and Mark Jordan - what more could you want?

I will never understand why ITV scrapped this popular and well loved show! Oh well at least we can sit back and enjoy the first series in all it's glory! I just hope we get to see all 8 series released on DVD, especially the Robert Cavanah and Sarah Beck-Mather episodes!!

This DVD is a MUST HAVE!!!! 6/5!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sunday nights are not the same. 6 Sep 2011
By ACB (swansea) TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The last installment of 'The Royal' on the 31st July 2011 was clearly not the intended final episode as we were all left frustrated with the 'what happened next' factor? Fortunately the series is captured on DVD beginning with the 2003 Series 1 spin-off of another captivating Sunday-Nighter, 'Heartbeat'. St Aidan's Royal Free Hospital, actually located by the sea in Scarborough, always looked like a cottage hospital coping with major trauma and emergencies in the most unlikely setting and circumstances. The superb cast and script flowed with enormous humour and entertainment and carried the scenario, sealing a loyal following.

The seven episodes commence with administrator T.J.Middleton (Ian Carmichael) working with the marvellous matron, always 'Matron' never a real name, (Wendy Craig) authoritatively in command. The medical team of Dr Jill Wetherill (Amy Roberts), Dr David Cheriton (Julian Ovendon) Dr Gordon Ormerod (Robert Davis) along with the eccentric pipe smoking Mr Rose (Dennis Lill), who can diagnose and operate on seemingly anything even with his pipe in an abdomen along with a scalpel, supply the ingredients of a successful drama. Staff Nurse Taylor (Zoie Kennedy) and later welcome addition of Irish Nun, Sister Brigid, (Linda Armstrong) provide 'hospitable' counterfoils for the other acts. Malingerer Claude Greengrass (Bill Maynard) from 'Heartbeat' adds some comical touches (although he can be irksome at times) along with the scanty portering staff. Michelle Hardwick (Lizzie Kennoway ) adds more than a touch of appeal. We go through roof-top falls, motorbike crashes, rat infestations, car accidents, coffin fits, misdiagnoses, abandoned babies, threats of hospital closure, melodramatic interactions with staff. All borne with fortitude and hence continued survival of 'The Royal'.

The series matured with some changes in personnel to develop it's own identity. More, please, (doubtful) but if these DVD's and others have to do us, they do it with great charm especially with the interplay, friction, romance, ambition, stamina and patient care in an intimate hospital setting. Having been a hospital doctor for forty years the poignancy and recognition of the 'Royal' personalities are plausible in real life, adding to its vibrant character. Marvellous.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, The Royal released on DVD!!! 4 Nov 2011
Format:DVD
ITV should never have axed The Royal and should certainly not have 'finished' it on such a tragic cliffhanger. At least loyal fans can finally re-watch episodes from series one (and hopefully subsequent series) of this fantastic show, and for that we should be very grateful. The drama, comedy and romance (and of course, the backdrop of the swinging sixties!) seen throughout the series provided perfect Sunday night television - The Royal will be greatly missed by millions!

This DVD is a must for any fan of The Royal!

They were OK but missed the ad caps. At least the Heartbeat DVD sets have the ad caps. When they showed them on ITV they did have the ad caps.
