One Man. One Family. One Royal Mess. Sir David Jason is The Royal Bodyguard.

After a life of service in the army, Captain Guy Hubble (Sir David Jason) finds himself put out to seed as a car park attendant at Buckingham Palace. That is, until he is surprisingly promoted to head of Royal security after first endangering, then miraculously saving, The Queen’s life. Hubble’s boss, Colonel Whittington, is not amused. He is desperate to see the back of Hubble; he knows only too well about his long line of botched operations and relentless mishaps. Though totally out of his depth, Hubble takes his new role very seriously. However he soon manages to upset foreign ambassadors, members of the public and his colleagues as he haphazardly carries out his duties. Most alarmingly, Hubble often finds himself taking on dangerous one man rescue missions for The Queen and her family. Captain Guy Hubble is a walking disaster, and the fate of the Royal Family now rests in his hands.

Starring Sir David Jason, Geoffrey Whitehead, Timothy Bentinck and Tim Downie with a guest appearance from David Walliams; The Royal Bodyguard is a comedy about the wrong man, in the wrong job, in the wrong household....

1.0 out of 5 stars Abysmal 16 Feb 2013
By D.A.C
I had high hopes for this sitcom when the first episode aired. 30 minutes later I wanted to turn back the clock and get the 30 minutes back for something useful.

I did end up watching the entire series in hope that it would improve, sadly it did not. It seemed the public agreed, starting off with over 8 million, the viewing figures tumbled to just over 2 million in a matter of weeks.

Seeing David Jason mumble and stumble through 3 hours of television is not a pretty sight. It does have the occasional funny moment, but for a primetime BBC One sitcom, this fell by the wayside.

Thankfully it was dropped and a second series did not appear.

Save your money and buy something better. Unless, of course, you actually liked it.........

1.0 out of 5 stars Twaddle 16 Sep 2012
By R. C. Harris TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The only remarkable thing about this series is why such an accomplished and respected actor like David Jason should have taken part in such twaddle? Judging by the reviews you either love it or hate it. We have a friend who loves it and recommended it to us. I found it about as funny as Haemorrhoids and as subtle as a house brick. It is slapstick at its worst, with a poor script and characters who are instantly forgetable.

Now, who do I dislike enough to send them a DVD of the series?

1.0 out of 5 stars Purile Rubbish 31 Jan 2012
By Javert
How on earth did Sir David ever agree to put his name to this complete utter rubbish.
It made me cringe to watch such a major talent take part in such complete bilge,it was an insult to the viewers intelligence.

1.0 out of 5 stars An Embarrassing End... 21 Oct 2012
'The Royal Bodyguard' is an embarrassing end to a great man's career. As far as I know, this series was David Jason's swan song as an actor: he said he wasn't going to make any more programmes, although you never can tell... Jason can act - there is no question of that. He surprised us all with his skill as a serious actor in 'Frost' and 'All The King's Men' to name but a few. But he shone even more in comic roles such as Granville and the inimitable Delboy of 'Only Fools And Horses' fame. So why should this new comic series have failed so miserably? It is a trult cringeworthy series that tries to squeeze laughs out of silly plots and slapstick laid on with a trowel. It doesn't work, and does no justice to Jason's expertise.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as they say...very slightly 11 Oct 2013
What is the bbc's obsession with attempting to recreate Only fools and horses at Christmas. While John Sullivan was still around, both Green green grass and rock and chips (both terrible) got Christmas specials. After his death its now David Jason on xmas with this and the forthcoming (completely pointless) open all hours revival.
That out of the way this show did have the odd funny moment once you stopped cringing. The writers had written the worst week of my life which I felt to be childish and silly and it caries over to this show. I like both Johnny English and Pink Panther films so this is something I should enjoy, which is not the case.
The fact we don't see any royals in the show means we get a lot of events off screen as well as the obvious stunt doubling. Not helping is that episode 2 rips off the thin blue line pilot for around 15 years earlier!
Two examples of why this series doesn't work.
1. David walliams appears in one episode and makes a decent villain. However he dies by being crushed by ice cream. Seriously!
2. David Jason in drag trying to seduce a suspect. In 2011/3?
For youngsters only.

By Scots Lass TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Much was made of the return to BBC Comedy by Sir David Jason - he even fronted the Christmas 2011 idents on the channel. Sadly, it seems nobody at the Beeb had sat down and watched this horrific show, had they done so it would either have been broadcast on CBBC (when The Chuckle Brothers were resting) or binned all together. The title role, that of an incompetent car park attendant promoted to the role of bodyguard for the Queen, might have worked if given to someone under the age of 30 or someone who could give us a Chris Barrie 'Brittas' (or 'Rimmer'!) character. Sadly, at 71, the idea of Jason protecting anyone, let alone the Queen, was a stretch too far from episode 1.

Slapstick and prat falls have also had their day. Peter Sellers took the art form further with Clueseau, Leslie Neilson in 'Police Squad' and 'Naked Gun' and Rowan Atkinson with 'Mr Bean' and 'Johnny English' all added new depth and constant LOL visual gags to this form of comedy. But an elderly man in a poor fitting wig wrestling with an empty suit of armour? Knocking down the lid on a grand piano? Causing a free standing world globe to career across a room? And broadcast - after endless hype - post watershed? 7.1 million switched on episode one on Boxing Day. 1.5 million switched off BEFORE THE END. Since then the viewing numbers have halved. The BBC Points of View website is awash with views from disappointed Jason fans who switched on full of hope and instead found themselves embarrassed to watch a comedy great reduced to this. But Jason agreed to make it - he even, unusually, appeared on chat shows to promote it. A pity he does not seem to have watched a completed episode. The only emotion his bumbling character arouses in viewers is pity.
