Another excellent travel guide from The Rough Guide people. As usual everything was accurate and easy to read. 90% of the cafes, restaurants and bars that we visited during our week in NY were from recommendations in this book and we were never disappointed. When you are faced with so much choice, it is good to know you can rely on The Rough Guide to point you in the right direction. We purchased tickets online before our holiday for a couple of attractions, as advised by The Rough Guide, and were so glad we did to minimise the queues. At other times, we got tickets on the day, as advised by The Rough Guide, and it was so the right way to go. We honestly did not leave the hotel without this book in my bag, whether during the day or when we went out at night. Only 1 criticism - I think our hotel, The Rosewood Carlyle, should be in the guide!

This 456-page book - the 14th (print) edition of February 2014 - is an interesting and readable (the two are not always found together) guide to the American East Coast city of New York, New York. Unlike many guides, this is not a glossy booklet dotted with colourful photographs to make it look superficially attractive, but a (literally) rough guide in terms of comparative paper finishes, but well-designed and presented, with readable text, useful maps, and (well-chosen) photographs only where space allows. The excellent design and layout means that you don’t need unnecessary spot illustrations to break up column after column of small-printed data.

The Contents are
P004: Introduction (Where to go, when to go, what to see, etc.)

P020: Basics (travel, transport, culture & etiquette, other touristy stuff)

P036: The City (the Guide): containing 21 chapters, each covering a particular area of the city

P264: Listings (accommodation, eating, drinking & nightlife, entertainment & arts, shopping, etc.)

P410: Contexts (articles on the city in history, film & books)

P426: Index

P444: City Plan

Bought it to do research before our first NY trip. Great for background information, too cumbersome to carry around but that is not what we bought it for.

I took this guide book with me to NYC earlier this year. It's well written, easy to understand & informative. It covers all the areas likely to be visited by tourists in NYC in detail. I would consider it slightly better than the DK version of NYC guide. The only gripe is a lack of detailed maps.

Very useful and informative guide with plenty of current recommendations for eating & drinking (as of May 2014). The layout is user friendly, well presented and easy to follow. With decent maps, local knowledge and engaging descriptions this book will help you get the most of your NY visit.

I ordered this so that I can plan a trip to New York next year. It has given me a feel for the city, it's layout and helpful information about hotels, the facilities to expect and the areas of the city to visit. I feel I now know what to expect when I visit.

used it as pre reading while on plane across - covers NY well - selected where I wanted to go etc in advance - but resorted to iPhone and google maps / tube map etc once on the ground as easier to use.
