Product Description

There is a certain quality to the music of Scandinavia that seems born in the long winter months; it is dark and humorous, steeped in tradition yet sharply inventive. This Rough Guide showcases some of the most adventurous sounds from the region, including the techno-joiking of Wimme, Icelandic minimalism by Amiina, and explosive experimentation by Kimmo Pohjonen with the Kronos Quartet. Bonus CD: Introducing Kardemimmit Enjoy the elegant, home-spun sounds of Finnish quartet Kardemimmit. Good friends Maija, Jutta, Anna and Leeni each play kantele and sing in delicate close harmony throughout. Well-established on the Scandinavian scene, Introducing Kardemimmit is the band's first international release and rings with their trademark fresh and folksy style.

Please note, this is the Second Edition of Rough Guide to Music of Scandianvia. This new one, from 2012, is also excellent, like the first one from 2000, and artfully combines a variety of styles of music into a very satisfying adventure. Each piece is great on its own and the overall concept and experience of the whole album is like an exciting Arctic dream. Dive in and enjoy an alternative Arctic like you have never known. Recommended!

A beautiful, diverse collection 26 Jan. 2013

I listen to this CD all the time. I remember the first listen and how happy it made me feel, reading the booklet and learning about the artists. It's electrifying. Like most of the Rough Guides that I've heard, this has a lot of variety to it, but there are common threads binding these songs together. It is all contemporary music, it typically has a bright, minimalist, experimental flavor to it. Some jazz influences are heard as well as odd time signatures.
The instrumentation is diverse and interesting, but I think most listeners will agree, the vocals are the centerpiece of practically every song. The unique vocal melodies and harmonies are often chilling and powerful at the same time. These artists really know how to leave their mark. The bonus disc by Kardemimmit is lush. If you're in the mood for a more intimate look at Scandinavian music, these lilting folk tunes are very soothing. It also includes some overtone singing. I'm inspired to visit some of the countries of this region and seek out the bands.
It's that good.
