I am astounded by the shamelessly negative reviews of this excellent guidebook. Phil Lee's witty, incisive and highly personal style is so refreshing, and his opinions on which places and attractions to see and which to avoid are invaluable and always hit the mark. I first used the 1996 version of this book on my first solo trip to Mallorca (in that summer)and although admittedly I can't comment on other reviewers' remarks about the Palma shop, restaurant and club scene, I can say that for the great outdoors, such as places on the island to visit and magnificent hikes (ALL the hikes in the book are fantastic and easy to follow)it is unbeatable. Definitely the best comprehensive guide book to Mallorca.

Going Native in Catalonia [Catalunya]
Although we didn't spend much time in Palma, I found the information in this book to be very reliable. We spent a couple of weeks in Soller (on the other side of Mallorca) and made trips to Deià and Valldemossa.
The Rough Guide to Mallorca was a handy companion at all times and did, in fact, lead me to discover some more than half-decent bars.
I also liked some of the (slightly sarcastic) comments on the tourist areas and found the historical background sections to be very useful.

These reviews raise more issues about the prejudices of guidebooks generally and the surprising shortcomings of Amazon, than they do about this individual guidebook.
Virtually every guidebook in existence is dismissive of package tour culture. Whether you want to know where to find english all day breakfasts or how to avoid them, a more even handed approach, explaining precisely that, would be much more helpful than a crude dismissal. The authors and editors are entitled to their personal prejudices, but would widen their readership by keeping them in the background.
It is absolutely wrong for Amazon to sell time-limited guide books, or any similar product such as tax guides, without absolute clarity as to whether it is the latest edition that is being sold.You should go a stage further and advise where an updated edition is on the production line.
Finally, you rather make the point of the chief negative review for its author. He complains the updates are not comprehensive enough and do not reflect reality at the time of issue. That may or may not be fair comment. He wrote that review in 2004.The latest issue of the guidebook came out in 2010. What is the relevance of that review in 2011. Amazon need some system for deleting reviews which are themselves likely to become irrelevant or unfair with the passing of time.

horrible--no detail
This book lacks detail on most of Mallorca. Unless you are going North or West, the book merely describes places you might like to visit. Read more

Good guide
Very detailed and accurate guide. My only slight quibble is that the guide can be a bit snobby in places (in my humble opinion).

A good guide
I bought this book after my holiday in Mallorca and can confirm it gives good advice. It is full of interesting background information. I will take it when I go again.

Could do with being updated
Although this book has all you would expect from The Rough Guide, it is unfortunately a little dated. It was published in 2007 and could definately do with being updated. Read more
