Product Description

Product Description

Written by a resident of the city, this guide to Madrid offers the reader a glimpse of the less well-known sights, as well as a guide to the leading tourist attractions. All the museums of this historic capital are reviewed and there is information on nearby sites, such as Toledo, Segovia, and the monastery-palace of El Escorial. Football, bars, accommodation and eating out are all covered, with additional sections on art, architecture and famous former residents, such as Goya. Containing similar information to the larger "Rough Guides", the pocket-sized guide is written in the irreverent style characteristic of the series.

About the Author

Simon Baskett has lived and worked in Madrid for nine years, with his wife and young children. As well as updating the Rough Guide to Madrid, Simon does freelance travel and sports writing for the BBC, Reuters and Four Four Two magazine.

Great guide 12 Oct 2004
Format:Paperback
This is a great guide to Madrid - my husband bought me the Time Out guide (having found the Barcelona Time Out guide very good)at the same time and I used both during a visit in March 2004, but found this one easier to use. Used this to book our whole trip - Great recommendations for hostals, bars and restaurants, not so good for tapas bars. Also, very good reviews of the art galleries (our main reason for visiting).

ok - but out of date 13 Sep 2005
Format:Paperback
The version I bought was published in 2002 and the times (and prices) have certainly moved on. I liked the book's general information overall but the taxi to/from the airport was 35euros (not 17), Santa Ana wasn't as lively or pretty as described, La Solea was at a different address and the Mandrilenos (locals) weren't as willing to help my attempts at Spanish as I was led to believe. The maps are good and the size very handy - some of the historical references and information is interesting and readable. We were glad that my companion had a different guide book so we could compare! Average.

great size, handy for the pocket, has all the things you need, a little inaccurate in places but generally tells you all you need to know. Great!
