It's been over two years since this rough guide was revised and boy does it show! Obviously things like restaurants come and go but in too many places the basic information is just plain wrong. A number of the maps don't actually show venues in the correct place which can be more confusing than now showing them at all. San Francisco is a delightful place but does contain a number of what the locals refer to as "sketchy" neighbourhoods and the book completely fails to provide a clear description of the reality of these areas. Frankly if you took on blind faith the descriptions of places like Tenderloin, SoMa, parts of the Mission, Oakland etc etc you would be lucky not to find yourself in serious trouble. I was also deeply disappointed by the general tone of the book which fails to impart any sense of enthusiasm for what is one of my favourite cities in the world.

As always, Rough guides are spot on, they not only introduce you to a city or country but also help you make decisions.Instead of listing 20 restaurants, for example, rough guides will point out the specialties or recommendations and rarely do they go wrong. I visited a good handful of places with the Rough guide and it never disappointed me.Highly recommended!!
