Product Description

Product Description

Do our consumer choices really have a major impact on people and planet? If so, what can we do about it? Which companies and products should we support or avoid? And which ethical claims can we trust? The Rough Guide to Ethical Shopping cuts through the greenwash to answer these and many other questions. Without preaching or oversimplifying, it covers topics including - do boycotts work? Is buying local better? How fair is fair-trade? What about sweatshops, or organics? The Rough Guide looks at what to buy - the human, environmental and animal-rights implications of everything from tea to chicken, jewellery to makeup, electricity tariffs to plane tickets. Also examined are shops and companies - from clothes shops and supermarkets to banks and travel agent - both high-street names and ethical specialists. Finally, there's a directory of useful websites, books and magazines, plus tips on how to do your own research.

This book is more than just a list of good companies to support and evil companies to boycott. It examines the whole issue of ethical consumerism with all its advantages and pitfalls. Each section examines the pro's and cons of selecting specific products on moral grounds. For example, buying local produce is good for the environment, but may harm Third World farmers who rely on exports to First World countries for their livelihoods.

Overall this book gives a balanced view of all the issues and steers clear of prescribing what you should or shouldn't buy. It gives the readers the information and resources to make up their own minds.

Don't buy this great book!!

It has been superseeded by The Rough Guide to Ethical Living - 2nd of November 2006 and then by The Rough Guide to shopping with a Conscience on the 25th of Jan 2007. (The one advantage to this book is that is smaller than the two newer versions)

Don't make the same mistake I did!

A fantastic little book which gives you lots of facts and references. Hopefully the author publishes an updated version before the references to websites are too old. Love the book. Nice little summaries of dozens of areas where one can shop 'better' with references to where find more information.
