Product Description

CD Description

Produced by Dave Alvin and Greg Leisz, this was Tom Russell's first HighTone album. Russell has written songs for such well-known country artists as Suzy Bogguss, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Johnny Cash and Joe Ely. The songs on this record centre around a California theme, and they mix Russell's picturesque folk sagas with songwriting contributions from Peter Case, Chris Gaffney and Dave Alvin. The Woody Guthrie-esque "Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son" features a vocal verse-swapping trio of Russell, Alvin and Case. Tracks: Volver, Volver / The Rose Of San Joaquin / Hand Carved Heart / Heartaches Are Stealin' (Come Sundown) / What Do You Want? / Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son / Out In California / The Sky Above, The Mud Below / The Gardens / Strawberry Moon / Between The Cracks / Tramps And Hawkers / Volver, Volver. Also available: THE LONG WAY AROUND (THE ACOUSTIC COLLECTION) (HCD8081), THE MAN FROM GOD KNOWS WHERE (HCD8099), BORDERLAND (HCD8132), MODERN ART (HCD8154), INDIANS & COWBOYS, HORSES & DOGS (HCD8165).

Great Story Telling 28 Feb 2009
Format:Audio CD
This was the first Tom Russell CD I ever purchased (In fact the first CD I purchased after giving up on vinyl). I had been listening to a local BBC radio station for quite some time, and the presenter/DJ would regularly play a particular track from this Tom Russell release. The song being played intrigued me so much that I finally stopped what I was doing and listened until the track was finished and the artist was named. The track in question was the wonderful 'The Sky Above & The Mud Below'.
Tom Russell has a gift of being able to draw pictures in your mind. This song is a prime example of this. I would often discribe that song as a 'Story Book Song',true to the tradition of Bob Dylan's greatest work, A movie will unfold in your mind whilst listening to the words. The album however is not just simply a one song album. There are other outstanding songs contained within such as Out in California and Between The Cracks. If you have never listened to Tom Russell, you could do worse than start with this release as an introduction.

Having bought a number of his Albums and seen him recently, I had to buy this at the low price (£5). The album does not disappoint, but some tracks do appear on other Tom Russell albums so care when choosing. If you get the chance to see him don't miss it.

The Best Russell CD Yet! 11 Jan 1999

No one can write, and sing like Tom Russell. And he proves it, more than ever, in The Rose Of San Jaoquin. I haven't been able to stop playing it since the first time I opened it. A Must!Jay MarvinKHOW Radioauthor of Punk Blood

Tom Russell is not well known, but a first rate talent. 13 Jun 1998

This album is one of the best of a whole series of great albums he has recorded. His song writing is wonderful and his performances are first rate. My wife says his voice reminds her of a young Johnny Cash.

A Marvelous group of songs and musical poetry 19 Dec 2003
By Nick Sinclair - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I am on my second tape of this! 3 songs stand out especially: The title song 'Rose of the San Joaquin' will take your breath away,"Somebody's Husband, somebody's son" is just exquisite, absolute ear candy delivered as only Tom Russell can, and the achingly beautiful "Tramps & Hawkers" will have you listening again and again. The rocking "Out in California" moves at a pace that will wake the dead. My personal favorite is "Sky above, Mud Below", a Blue Roan horse lovers delight of a story song. A lot less Volver-volver would have suited me, but all in all if you like Tom Russell you have to own this.
