Product Description

"The rescuer needs rescuing if you think that you can."

When Jayne finds a rose, it reveals a horrible prophecy about a cursed prince which forces her into a world of witches, talking toads and apocalyptic horsemen. Armed with a host of bizarre characters, an axe called Alan and her own Common Sense, forsaking the possibility that she may not be loved in return, Jayne is faced with a question she never expected... can she even be sure of her own identity?

Three hundred years later, when a family move into her crooked little cottage, they set in motion the chain of events that seals the fate of the fairytale forever.

This is the first novel from Bethany Dean, writer, filmmaker and archaeologist from Dorset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp like Thorns, Soft like petals. 9 Sep 2011

Right from the get go this book grabs you in it's silky claws and pulls you into it. As you read you can almost smell the dust from the decrepit cottage or the fresh sweetness of the roses of the garden. It's very hard to picture the scene in a lot of modern novels, The Rose Prince however almost forces you to act out every line in your head. This book is a sure fire classic for anyone with half a brain. A Must Read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The rescuer needs rescuing if you think that you can." 22 Dec 2012
By Rose Drew - Published on Amazon.com

This is a brisk, cant-be-put-down first novel that is fun, has unexpected turns, and makes the very good point that young women can be brave, self-reliant and innovative. What will add to the enjoyment of the reader, though, is that the underlying messages of self-reliance and stubborn never-say-never are packaged in witty writing and great characters: it's not preachy but fun.

This is a great book for clever 10-12 yr olds, reluctant readers, and us adults who want a fun, interesting read. The author writes with a wink and a nod to old fashioned fairy tales and then brings this firmly into the 21st century. More, Ms Dean, more.
5.0 out of 5 stars You've NEVER Read a Fairytale Like This! 10 Mar 2012

Young adults beware, you've never read a fairytale like this before! The Rose Prince is written in a 3rd person point of view, there were few if any typo's (none that jolted me out of the story) and the story itself is a brilliant, gorey and imaginative twist of the classic Prince Charming story. I'm trying to think of an example....it's like your classic prince charming story vs Supernatural (the tv show). Just when you start to believe that it's all fair maidens and singing violets...POW!!....amputations and parasitic plants tearing holes through flesh. It gets a bit squirmish...a little bit "ewww, imagine that!"...but it's not the stuff of nightmares (I would let my kids read it).

Although the plot was complex, the simplistic style of writing and the authors sense of humour kept it together to the end. The elaborate characters are rich with life. The settings are embellished with colourful descriptions. The plot kept me guessing with its many revelations and twists throughout the story. I loved they way this story speaks to the reader, not at them. I loved the gristly details.

I'm bestowing 4.5 stars on this one. There were a couple of points - some twists in the plot - that I think the author could have elaborated on at the time rather than later in the story but all up it was a great read.
