This is an extremely good book, beautifully written in a careful, gentle style which repays careful reading. It details the effects of the French Revolution at a very personal and local level, and presents a human story enriched with an evocative sense of time and place.

Occasionally I felt the author didn't make it clear which character was speaking, and sometimes I had to re-read to be sure I had understood what she meant. It is a book that demands concentration because she presents her story economically. Nevertheless, her writing is so very good that it was no hardship to read a passage twice through.

A passing knowledge of the course of the French Revolution would be useful before starting the book because the author immerses us in the period rather than treating readers as outsiders, so events are not always immediately explained.

I strongly recommend this book, and hope more by this author will be published.

I agree with one of the other reviewer in that it wasn't always clear who was speaking. The chopping and changing of narrator irritated me a bit and interfered with my enjoyment.
(I'm not the sort of person who needs everything spelled out a-la-hollywood style, so it was a genuine frustration!)

I enjoyed the premise of the book and the characters, and didn't realise that post revolution pitted friend against friend to such an extent, so that opened my eyes.
It wouldn't stop me reading other works from the author, but won't be re-reading this one I'm afraid.

I loved 'The Hamilton Case', also by Michelle de Kerstner. It was a suprise book, as I got it 2nd hand and didn't know what to expect, but it was beautifully written and very good. So I was really looking forward to reading this book but found it very weak in comparison. But this is an earlier book and her writing has obviously developed a lot in the interim. I would also be tempted to say that the author really found her voice when writing about the country she is originally from and its fascinating history and beauty, rather than a somewhat insipid tale of rose growers during the french revolution. This book was enjoyable to read and had flashes of what I loved in her later book, but is no comparison to 'The Hamilton Case'.
