Book Description

28 Feb 2006
In his sleek, visceral novels Deviant Way, Kiss of Evil, and The Violet Hour, Richard Montanari slammed into the suspense field like a force of nature. Now Montanari has written an astounding novel that pits two besieged detectives against a fiercely intelligent serial killer.

Sprawling beneath the statue of William Penn, Philadelphia is a city of downtrodden crack houses and upscale brownstones. Somewhere in this concrete crazy quilt, one teenage Catholic girl is writing in her diary, another is pouring her heart out to a friend, and yet another is praying. And somewhere in this city is a man who wants these young women to make his macabre fantasy become reality. In a passion play of his own, he will take the girls–and a whole city–over the edge.

Kevin Byrne is a veteran cop who already knows that edge: He’s been living on it far too long. His marriage failing, his former partner wasting away in a hospital, and his heart lost to mad fury, Byrne loves to take risks and is breaking every rule in the book. And now he has been given a rookie partner. Jessica Balzano, the daughter of a famous Philly cop, doesn’t want Byrne’s help. But they will need each other desperately, since they’ve just caught the case of a lifetime: Someone is killing devout young women, bolting their hands together in prayer, and committing an abomination upon their otherwise perfect bodies.

Byrne and Balzano spearhead the hunt for the serial killer, who leads them on a methodically planned journey. Suspects appear before them like bad dreams–and vanish just as quickly. And while Byrne’s sins begin to catch up with him, and Balzano tries to solve the blood-splattered puzzle, the body count rises. Meanwhile, the calendar is approaching Easter and the day of the resurrection. When the last rosary is counted, a madman’s methods will be revealed, and the final crime will be the one that hurts the most.

Relentlessly paced and vividly told, The Rosary Girls is a smart, emotionally complex, fiercely gripping thriller from an author who takes chances, breaks new ground, and leaves readers haunted and moved long after the last page is turned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real 5-star read 3 Jan 2008
By Dr Evil TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
'The Rosary Girls' begins when a young girl has been found murdered with her hands bolted together as well as other sickening mutilations and rosary beads between her fingers. Called to investigate are long-time homicide detective, Kevin Byrne and his new partner, Jessica Balzano. More girls, with the only connection to each other being that they attend catholic schools, are found in similar conditions every day leading up to Easter. With time running out and next to no clues on who and where the killer will strike next, Byrne and Balzano are in a race against time to stop one of Philidelphia's worst serial killers.

This is the first book that I've read by Richard Montanari (and the first of his that was released in the UK) and is definitely not the last as 'The Rosary Girls' is well up there with the likes of Thomas Harris' Silence of the Lambs and James Patterson's Kiss The Girls. I've now ordered the second Byrne and Balzano novel, The Skin Gods, and am really looking forward to giving it a read!

From the opening chapter I was completely gripped by the storyline. Montanari really knows how to write a good thriller - just when I thought I'd worked out who the killer was (on a number of occasions) he turns the story completely around, making me think it was someone completely different! The setting is dark and gritty, showing you the most violent and seedy sides of Philedelphia. The lead characters Byrne and Balzano are very likeable and believable (although some of the crime fiction detective stereotypes are still there) and are ones that I look forward to see how they develop in future novels.

Overall it is a very entertaining read and one of the best that I've read in a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good! 4 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
I bought this book after reading some of these reviews on Amazon and agree that it is a very good thriller.

The story is based in Philadelphia, a new detective partnership and their attempts to stop a crazed serial killer targeting young Catholic school girls. Veteran cop Kevin Byrne is your typical no nonsense hero and he is joined by Jessica Balzano, a young but determined recruit. The hunt is on for the madman inflicting sickening acts of violence against innocents.

What i liked about The Rosary Girls is that it keep's you guessing right to the end, there's plenty of suspects and no obvious culprit. Indeed i was surprised when the killer was revealed.

The charecters, plot and dialogue were very well written. Some of the crime scenes and description were a bit much for me at times but i understand that it was all part of the story and to be expected in a crime thriller.

Overall very good and i will certainly read the next installment, Skin Gods.

I honestly thought I had worked out who was responsible for the grisly murders of Catholic school girls in Philadelphia within the first 100 pages of this book. It is testament to how well Montanari writes that, even with several red herrings, I was adamant in my belief that I had discovered it. And he proved me wrong. The ending was as much as a surprise as I could have hoped. It was well worth the read.

The book is written in a clear, pithy and poignant style with fantastic pace and great characters. Byrne and Balzano quickly form a team which the author never sullies with artificial distrust or dislike that so many other newly partnered cops seem to suffer from. The most important thing was the case. And both of them focus on the case - however, as the days move forward, hidden parts of each detective's personality and life are revealed, giving them even more empathy and depth.

A fantastic book which is difficult to put down. The author captures the dark criminal side of Philadelphia beautifully. Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars For God's Sake! 11 Jun 2008
By R. Ward
Format:Paperback
Two stars awarded for the relationship between the two main characters Byrne and Balzano which has at least got some potential. The story itself is all a bit boring, it feels as if Mr Montanari is doing a "serial killer - by numbers" job here. Almost every scenario has been done better by other authors. I will give the sequel a go but if it isn't an instant improvement on this I won't bother persevering. Pick something else, there are plenty of much better books in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story - more to this standard needed! 15 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
I've not read any of the other books by this author. Thus was a desperation buy and I am very pleased with the purchase - I'm keenly awaiting the sequel called The Skin Dogs.

Without giving too much away this is mutliplot story covering the killings, the new detective partnership and the situation between a reporter and one of the detectives. The storyline builds well and many clues and avenues of thought are teasingly offered to the reader. I liked the way the various characters were described along with their personality and thought processes.

A lot was put together in this book and the work pays off. This is a very full book with a gripping plot. This book makes many others look very flat in comparison. This author is going on my must have list. A riveting read, highly recommended.

I could only read the first chapter or so. No relationships, no characters no social interaction or characters to identify with. Just horrible events in a list. I'll never read this author again.
