Product Description

Product Description

Billboard launched their Hot 100 chart in 1955 and heralded in the rock and roll era, for almost as soon as the chart launched, acts such as Bill Haley & His Comets, The Platters, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley made their debut appearances. After decades of crooners such as Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, a new style was evident - the music was vibrant, the audience much younger and fashion became an integral part of the scene. This album features 22 of the most compelling hits of the time - the songs that marked the transition from pop to rock and roll. Many of the songs on this album remain relevent today, with many being covered by contemporary artists, even retaining the original rock and roll stylings.

What can I say, other than that this collection of original recordings from the Fifties really is tremendous value.

Apart from the well-known tracks here by such rock 'n' roll pioneers as Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, Little Richard and Gene Vincent, which hardly need my endorsement, there are several lesser-known gems too. And some of them are otherwise difficult to get hold of, or unavailable, on CD.

Amongst the rest we have James Brown's first chart hit, the seminal Please, Please, Please and Etta James's The Wallflower (aka Roll With Me Henry - well, OK then) to name just two.

Nope, you cannot go wrong here: 22 rockin' real 'uns. Those were the days!

How can this series of three CD's be called the Roots Of Rock 'n Roll when all three are packed with great 50's R+R, and none of the R&B/country etc that came before? It makes no sense.
Apart from that grumble, these are superb value for money, and if I did not already own the majority of tracks here I would certainly purchase them all.
Loose two stars for the rubbish misleading titles.
