Although a name new to me, Judy Loman was the principal harpist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1960 until 2002 and this American lady must be considered one of the world's premier (and long-serving!) harpists active today, surely better-known in the USA and Canada than here in Europe. Ms Loman has recorded several CDs as a solo artist, including another on Naxos that I have yet to hear
Harp Showpieces. I guess that recording the harp successfully is rather difficult; the producers and engineers were the well-known Norbert and Bonnie Kraft, he of many a great guitar recording, and the sound quality is, simply, marvellous.
The disc gives us ten pieces, often from French composers, all of which are masterfully played by Ms Loman. We have pieces from Grandjany, Tournier, Rota, Pierné, de Falla, Fauré, Prokofiev, Ms Loman's teacher Salzédo, and a much more recently written piece from Kelly-Marie Murphy. Although the opening piece from Grandjany piece on a theme of Haydn that opens the disc is perhaps the least interesting, but all of the other works, impressionist and modern, are very enjoyable.
Certainly not a disc just for insomniacs, this CD bears repeated evening hearing and is very highly recommended.
