Product Description

Album Description

* An important release for rockabilly and rock'n'roll fans, "The Rockin' South" is the first legitimate CD to anthologise a group of labels from Atlanta, Georgia, run by Bill Lowery, a music publisher who put the city on the map. These labels included NRC, Scottie, Wonder, Fox and Judd.

* Joe South, Tommy Roe and Wayne Cochran were among the artists who got their first break through Bill Lowery and their early sides (including Roe's original pre-hit Judd version of 'Sheila') are included on this set along with some great rockin' sides by the more obscure Rod Willis, the Four Minds, Sweetie Jones, Paul Peek and others.

* Compiled and annotated by Rob Finnis, "The Rockin' South" comes with a 6000 word note and many rare illustrations.

Beginnings in Georgia 28 Mar 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
The National Recording Corporation of Atlanta with its various subsidiary labels was surrounded with future talent as Joe South,Ray Stevens,Tommy Roe,Ray Smith,Ric Cartey and Wayne Cochran first recorded there.Cartey would write songs with his girlfriend and Young love was the B side of his first single eventually coming to the attention of Capitol A & R man Ken Nelson who had Sonny James record it.Possibly its their most valuable copyright as the song topped the charts in the U K for Tab Hunter. Here though is a great rocker called Scratchin' on my Screen.
Wayne Cochran never reached the heights but J Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers did when they covered his "Last Kiss" in 1964.
The one who did crack the top 40 was Tony Bellus with Robbin' the Cradle-still in the business he now has a website but is forever a One Hit Wonder.
Most of the NCR acts never even bubbled under but thats the name of the game.
Incidentally Paul Peek was once one of Gene Vincent's Bluecaps while Darrell Glenn is the son of Artie Glenn of Crying in the Chapel fame which Darrell recorded. When he wrote a song for Elvis called Indescribably blue it meant Elvis had recorded a song by both father and son
So one hit and unprecedented musical failure made NRC one of the great labels

Another great collection of obscure tracks from Ace 22 Dec 2007
By Vinnie Silvagio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
A nice blend of rockabilly and early rock 'n roll. An unusually high percentage of winners in a collection of this type. Great sound, and extensive notes, as always. Ace is one of the classiest labels out there.

But why has Amazon classified this as "explicit lyrics"? It is not at all. Perhaps they have misinterpreted the "Withdrawn version" notation on track 2 (The Rock-A-Round by Paul Peek). As explained in the liner notes, the version included here was not the original release. The original was edited to omit "an unruly [twenty second] guitar solo," which the publisher thought would "encourage radio plays".

This is produced by Ace; they don't publish objectionable lyrics. It consists of cuts for general release in America in the 50's.

There are no explicit lyrics on this disc!
