Biography

Biographyby Richie Unterberger

Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of ... Read more in Amazon's Roy Orbison Store

Product Description

Product Description

With Roy Orbison's sudden appearance on the chart in 1960 on the Monument label, Sun Records owner Sam Phillips wasted little time in going back into the vaults and dusting off a selection of songs Roy had recorded between 1956 and 1958. Roy had written most of his own material whilst at Sun (although much of it was credited to Sam Phillips), makinghim a significant loss to the label. This album, despite being recorded over a two year period, sees Roy performing in the same rockabilly style that the Sun label was best known for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your Sam Phillips production 1 May 2009
By David A. Shoenfelt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Very much brought into the contempory world. More sound - background singers and piano are more clear. Roy's voice as always, the greatest. Hints of the ballandeer he would become. This CD includes a great booklet with info on Texas, Texans and Roy. Very high quality jewel box. Besides all the songs from the original Sun Record vinyl release, it includes Roy's demos and undubbed versions. Yes, nothing that wasn't released somewhere else before, but with the original art work, and a total of 37 tracks - go, go, go and stimulate the economy
5.0 out of 5 stars Great early Orbison 15 Jun 2014
By Trent Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Most of the recordings are from his Sun Records sessions in 1955, but Sam Philips took his good old time releasing the music as an album. There is a better cd somewhere called "The Complete Sun Sessions" with more tunes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad sound quality 10 Mar 2010
By Patrick Taylor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
VERY subpar, muffled, sound on the first 12 tracks (the ones from the original album release).

No, really, I've rarely heard such bad sound on an "officially" released CD, and to think this is a 2009 edition (not some 1980's, early/bad, CD release !)
