Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Rock: Stone Cold Country is the sound of a country legend at top form. At 70, after passing through half a century of shows, recordings and overindulgence, George Jones's voice, always a miraculous instrument, is at the peak of its prowess in exploring the human condition. By and large the material here rises to that occasion. "Wood and Wire", a homage to amateur guitar pickers; the confessional, soul-baring "Half Over You"; and "I Am" are all vivid and telling. The boogie-bop of "I Got Everything" revives Jones's old "Thumper Jones" rockabilly persona, while his interpretation of "50,000 Names", Jamie O'Hara's wrenching tribute to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, is no less than spellbinding. "Beer Run", the much-hyped duet with Garth Brooks (and a variation on the Jones classic "White Lightning"), finds Brooks way out of his element. But nothing can prepare a listener for the cathartic version of Billy Joe Shaver's "Tramp on Your Street", starting with a full-blown arrangement that sheds instruments until only steel and acoustic guitars surround Jones's voice at the end. Dramatic without artifice, it's an ingenious ending to a remarkable document. --Rich Kienzle

Having been a George Jones fan for nearly forty year and owning nearly one hundred ablums of him I am always wary of any new albums. I think I've heard it all but time after time George just amazingly gets better. The songs on this album range from country rock to probably one of the most heart-moving songs I have ever heard him sing - '50,000 NAMES'. The feeling George puts into every song is uncanny but he out-shone himself here. The opening song, 'THE ROCK' is another song with true meanings that will bring back memories to may people. The thing with George is that most all of his songs have a meaning to us all in one way or another. 'BEER RUN' with Garth Brooks will get yur feet tapping, they duet very wel together and you can tell they are enjoying the song. 'WOOD AND WIRE' isa cleverly written song, I wondered at first what it was all about but it became evident halfway through. He sings about his dad in 'THE MAN HE WAS' and his comparison to himself which is quite a touching song along with 'HALF OVER YOU'. 'I GOT EVERYTHING' on the other hand is a bubbly song of a 'happy' George and he sings like it too (obviously thinking of Nancy at the time). I especially like 'HONEY HUSH', you can almost visualise George talking to his partner, the feeling in his voice is so sincere, not a sad song but a delightful 'love song'. 'WHAT I DIDN'T DO' is a song with very true meaning and I advise all to take a note of what he is saying (it may save your marriage). The songs I haven't mentioned are all just as good - GEORGE JONES at his best again!
To summerise - at the age of 70 George is still going strong as is evident by this album. I would advise anybody to buy this CD, the range of songs and beats would suit most all. Can't wait for his next album. A true fan
Brian Healy.

Can I give it a 10? 4 Oct 2001

You want the best? Well here he is. I've grown up listening to George Jones and one thing that you can always bet on, is that with each album, he's gonna keep going strong and getting better. While "getting better" may be putting it wrong (how could he ever top "Who's gonna fill their shoes?"), he certainly never falters. At 70 years old, his voice still shines and can still knock me through the wall. George Jones has seen and done more than any living rock star and has lived to tell about it (not unlike Johnny Cash). Tearing the plastic off the cd and putting it in my player, I felt instantly at home with "the rock". His albums all have that familiar tone yet he takes you throug a different experience with each tune.

To all the younger generation out there (I'm one of 'em) who want to hear some music played with real talent and compassion, pick up a George Jones or Merle Haggard album. Those guys are the real deal and put all of today's pretenders to shame. Disregard what your friends say about country music and form your own opinion. Listening to country music won't make you a hick, people.

If you're a long-time Jones fan, what are you waiting for? Go get it now. If you're new to country and want a real musical experience, look no further. If you don't love "Wood and Wire", then you don't have a soul. Damn, this is good.

THE ROCK- GEORGE JONES NEVER SOUNDED BETTER! 4 Oct 2001
By Patrick Hughes - Published on Amazon.com

I've been waiting for this cd for 2 years, ever since the release of "Cold Hard Truth" the Possum's last cd, I've been looking forward to his new album. I have NOT been let down! No way! This cd is a must for all George Jones Fans, and the casual country music fan. At 70 his voice sounds more rich & pure than ever. The songs picked on this cd are golden. "The Rock" is spellbinding, "Beer Run" shows Jones & Garth Brooks having a ball! This cd is a good balance of uptempo songs & ballads that are George Jones trademark. "Honey Hush" is an absolute favorite of mine, as well as "Tramp On Your Street". I dearly hope the Possum's voice never let's him down. On this new release, he hits all the high & low notes, no one does it better than the incomparable GEORGE GLENN JONES. Now if only this cd can go straight to #1 on the charts, then the Possum will get well deserved recognition. He will never need a rocking'chair!

THERE IS JONES AND THEN THERE IS THE REST 8 Oct 2001

George is no doubt on another level and noone will ever come close to touching him! At 70 years old he is still able to take Garth out behind the wood shed and give him a gool ol whipping!
This man is fighting the cause for all of us TRUE country fans and we all need to do our part and show him how thankful we are to still have the KING of country music still around. Believe me, after hearing the first song(The Rock) you will be in honky tonk heaven. This makes the sixth decade that Jones has graced us with his voice and after hearing this album there is no doubt that he is just getting started. THE LEGEND LIVES ON!
