Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Between his high-octane debut, Bad Boys, and 1998's wannabe blockbuster Armageddon, hotshot director Michael Bay forged his dubious reputation with this crowd-pleasing action extravaganza. In Rock, a psychotically disgruntled war hero (Ed Harris) seizes the island prison of Alcatraz and threatens to wage chemical warfare against nearby San Francisco unless the government publicly recognises the men who were killed under Harris's top-secret command. Nicolas Cage plays the biochemist who teams up with the only man ever to have escaped from Alcatraz (Sean Connery) in an attempt to foil Harris's terrorist scheme. As one might expect, what follows is an action-packed barrage of bullets, bodies, and climactic confrontations, replete with enough plot contrivances to give even the most jaded action fan cause for alarm. It's a load of hooey, but the cast is obviously having a grand old time, and there's enough wit to make the recycled action sequences tolerable. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis

In Michael Bay's The Rock, gung-ho general Francis Hummel (Ed Harris), armed with deadly chemical rockets and aided by violent cohorts, takes over the island of Alcatraz, holding 81 tourists hostage. Hummel promises to deploy the missiles over San Francisco if Washington doesn't make amends to ignored combat victims to the tune of $100 million. A cadre of Navy SEALs are dispatched to quell the situation, assisted by the mysterious, macho John Mason (Sean Connery), the only man to ever escape from Alcatraz, who must now help the SEALs break back in. Joining them is mild-mannered chemical weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage), who is unaccustomed to such things as guns and military maneuvers. Their high-octane mission is filled with surprises, particularly after Hummel and company quickly annihilate the SEALs--leaving Mason and Goodspeed to save the day all by themselves.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson (Top Gun, Crimson Tide)—-Simpson actually died just prior to the film's release-—reunited with director Bay, who had collaborated with the pair on Bad Boys the previous year, The Rock benefits from a trio of likeable leads in Connery, Cage and Harris (yes, even the villain of the piece is somewhat endearing), a thundering music score and a bevy of explosive set-pieces that combine to create an action-packed thrill ride of a movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to The Rock. 25 Nov 2010
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The Rock is directed by Michael Bay and written by David Weisberg, Douglas Cook & Mark Rosner. It stars Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, David Morse, William Forsythe & Michael Biehn.

When a highly decorated army general (Harris) decides that he's had enough of his men dying, and not getting the credit they deserve; he commandeers Alcatraz prison with a crack unit of Mercs. The plan is to hold the government to ransom or unleash from the prison biological rockets to bring Armageddon down on America. Enter chemical weapons expert Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Cage), who is forced to team up with the only man ever to escape Alcatraz-the mysteriously incarcerated in secret John Patrick Mason (Connery)-to break into the Rock and thwart the plans of the Mercs.

So Cage as a chemistry expert who possible holds the fate of the world in his shaky hands? Connery, aged 66, as a tough prison escapee sporting a "Grunge" haircut? And Ed Harris, surely a bastion of patriotic Americana, turning bad and wanting to unleash hell on the Stars & Stripes? To expect nothing else but a berserker Michael Bayhem picture based on these facts is surely folly? He certainly has a varied CV does Bay, as do the leading actors on show here. But when on form, with writers prepared to put blood into the characters, Bay can deliver high octane entertainment if it features a cast clearly in tune with the material. Such is the case here. It's no award winner. Naturally. But it does have some political smarts in the script. And if you want explosions, shoot outs and quips aplenty? Then this really will serve you well for a couple of hours. 7.5/10

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rock - BluRay 7 April 2008
Format:Blu-ray
Well, based on the other review on Amazon, as well as a couple more elsewhere, I purchased The Rock on DVD last week. It had been my favourite film for a good few years after watching it shortly after it's release. Good story, stong and convincing characters played by Connery, Cage and Harris and a generally great action packed film. I then noticed Amazon's 3 for 2 on selected BluRay discs. Well, I wasn't sure what to buy. But after watching The Rock again I decided I wanted to give it a go, and see if the difference really was poor. In the end, I'd say no. It's a great improvement on the DVD Much clearer visually and the sound is also much better. I'd recommend buying this on BluRay, as it's a fantastic film, and I believe there is a marked improvement on the DVD, which is now going to a friend.

I watched it on my 26" Sony Bravia KDL26P3020U - via my Playstation 3 (HDMI) set to 1080i (although at this size, there's no difference between 1080i and 720p)

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Guns, and Sean. 1 Aug 2000
Format:DVD
OK, it's not the best film that Simpson Bruckheimer and Bay, have produced. However, The Rock is still cool. It is interesting to see Nic Cage start on his path as action hero, and to see Sean Connery reprise his role of 007, (Isn't that the sort of mission 007 would have been sent on? Think about it, and the dates mentioned, what was connery acting in at the time?)
As with all the films that have digitally mastered on the cover, the picture is exceptional. I would have wanted more Bass in my explosions though, and the 5.1 soundtrack is not used to it's full potential. The film is still well worth it's purchase price, well done Amazon.
I would say that there are absolutely no extras though, when will the studios realise that we don't want to have to flip our disk half way through, and the reason we convert to DVD is for the additional information DVD provides. DVD is the format for the film buff and the studios should look at the extras provided on the JAWS special edition as an example of true value for money. Anyway enough moaning, if you liked The Rock at the cinema buy it, but not for any extras......

3.0 out of 5 stars Why flip? 27 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Don't get me wrong. I love this film. I think it is one of the best action films out there. If I were just reviewing the film, it would have to be 4 or 5 stars. But this is the DVD. Where the best film is totally ruined by the film being double sided. Flipping half-way through, when the tension is building, is one of the worst ideas I have seen. Admittedly, the quality of the remastering is superb, but why on two sides? Much longer films (eg. Heat) fit entirely on one side. Stick to VHS for this brilliant film, the DVD will leave you too disapointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars GREAT film! shame about the DVD 16 May 2000
Format:DVD
This is one of my all time favourite "silly" action movies. It's got it all. Thrills, Spills, Humour, Suspense, a sympathetic bad guy, Sean Connery. But do yourself a favour: order from the states, the region 2 DVD is a flipper, and has NO special features what so ever. Shame, they could have done something really good with a title like this.
