Product Description

Product Description

"The Roaring Twenty" tells the tale of the 1929 air derby for women pilots. This extraordinary story charts the first women's long-distance airplane race, a 2,800-mile saga across the United States. Competition was serious, and the event was risky - so much so that one of the 19 young women who participated didn't live through it. Braving stormy weather, mechanical difficulties, collisions, typhoid fever, and even claims of sabotage, not to mention the condescending and sometimes hostile press, the 18 who finished were lucky to do so. The nine-day race broke at night for banquets and balls, as the women pilots were feted by a fascinated public. Amelia Earhart was the most famous participant, but colorful characters abounded, including cigar-smoking Florence "Pancho" Barnes and New York society rebel Opal Kunz. The derby laid the foundation for the "99s" the first organization of women pilots, a group that flourishes to this day. Fifty duotone photographs accompany the text.

Early Women Flyers 30 Mar 2006
By Rebecca Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Rebeccasreads highly recommends THE ROARING 20 as an elegant tribute to our flying great-grandmothers.

1929 was a glorious year for the spills & thrills in the history of flight culminating in the National Air Races & Aeronautical Exposition in Cleveland, Ohio.

It will also feature a 9 day, 2,800 mile women's cross-country air race from Santa Monica in California to Ohio. These 20 aviatrixes, including Amelia Earhart, Evelyn "Bobbi" Trout, Mary Von Mach, Florence "Pancho" Barnes, Edith Foltz, Mary Haizlip & Opal Kunz, will fly by day & camp by night surviving many adventures & much excitement! One pilot with crash & burn, others will drop out & the death-defying few will make it to the finish line.

As you read THE ROARING 20, with its newspaper headlines & photos, you will be transported back to a very different time & into a crowd of remarkable women.
