5.0 out of 5 stars End of an epic series 18 Feb 2014
Sadly, this is the last volume in this excellent series - I am distraught! As with the previous volumes, this is a potent mix of country, r&b and doo-wop...and as before, it was all released over here, in the UK - who knew? Not too many, judging by the negligible amount of identifiable UK hits across all three sets.

So, 1954/55 as here, and we're on the cusp of rock'n'rolldom. As before, we're treated to a heady mix of country and rhythm & blues - the basic ingredients of r&r - and a dollop of doo-wop, some years before the term came into general use. (While I'm at it, it might be as well to realise that r&b had just freed itself from the more derogatory term 'race music').

By now, the term 'rock & roll' was coming into common parlance in the States, and mumbled about here in Blighty. Uncle Bill Haley was the touchstone in the UK, rewarded with many a hit, "Dim Dim The Lights..." not being one of them, compensated by "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie", his hot cover of The Esquire Boys (original) and The Treniers. Just slightly out of sync is Fats Domino, already with with a couple of UK hits (so somebody was listening!), his "Ain't That A Shame" peaking in January 1957. But all this muttering about r&r registered with our own Frankie Vaughan, who did serious chart biz with his three-on-the-trot covers of "Tweedle Dee", "Seventeen" and "My Boy Flat Top" - find 'em all here. (Er, not the covers!).

Meanwhile, back in the US, one or two mainstream 'entertainers' thought they'd give r&r a shot, maybe hedging their bets somewhat. Eartha Kitt and Jaye P Morgan put in acceptable performances, Billy Valentine doesn't.
