Anyone who travels a lot has seen places that blew you away, places that met your high expectations and places that really disappointed you. This book compares the traditional "must-see" sights of the world with alternatives that are just as stunning but less known and less crowded, summarising the plusses and minuses of each one so you can decide which site will give you the experience you're really looking for. As Bryson notes, it will also make you aware of so many beautiful places you'd never previously heard of that you'll dejectedly realise you can't possibly see everything that's worth seeing in one lifetime. But you'll probably make better choices with the time that you have.

I have loved every minute of reading this book. Beautiful pictures, interesting information and a whole array of destinations that I knew nothing about!

If you want inspiration for your travels, this is the book to graze on. I am learning so much about the world and different parts of it as I flit about between chapters as I see fit. It really does show you plenty of areas of the world which are not seen as frequently by travellers, but are equally worthy of a "lusted after" reputation. Also gives a few tips for travellers still intending on visiting the more common tourist traps, which is useful too.

Great to read cover-to-cover or display as a coffee table book. And once you've started flicking through, go and buy yourself some destination-specific travel guides...!!

This is a travel book with a difference. It describes less known locations that are equal to if not better than nearby famous locations. The description is a little misleading as it is not written by Bill Bryson, but he wrote the foreword. Having said that, I love it so much I have bought three more copies as presents for friends.

The pictures are wonderful and I can't wait to visit some of these locations.
