I found this book really hard to put down. It is beautifully written, easy to read and very informative. You really get 'carried away' by the story set in Edinburgh which is well described mixed with the extraordinary world of homelessness and visceral horror of being 'down and out'. How easy it is to have an ordinary life smashed by death, alchoholism or addiction and find yourself existing in a world unrecognised by the majority. Humour as always prevails in Gillian Galbraith's books, so a plot inherently depressing becomes lively and funny.

I've read all of the Alice Rice series and enjoyed them. The protagonist, Alice, goes from strength to strength, developing into a more rounded and believable character with each book. Some of the peripheral characters (DCI Bell, Mrs Melville) are beginning to gain more of an individual identity, also. This book is, in my view, the best of the series to date. Yes, it's a police procedural and yes, to some extent you can see what's coming next but it's well written and moves along at a decent pace. The plot certainly isn't entirely predictable; there are some surprises to catch the reader off guard but I'm not about to say any more and spoil it for others.

This book could be read as a stand-alone novel but, for maximum enjoyment, I'd recommend new readers start with 'Blood in the Water', the first of the series.

this is the latest in the ds alice rice mysteries set in edinburgh. worth the money as it is a book that once you start reading you can not put down. gillian galbraith is a welcome addition to the edinburgh crime scene and can be compared with ian rankin and quintin jardine.

I have read the other books in the Alice Rice series and felt they were developing well - but this one felt disjointed and the death of a main character jarred.
I will read the next book though.

I cannot wait for the next one. This story is a stunner. I don't want to give anything away but there are ups and downs galore, tragedy. happiness, jealousy and confusion.
