This is a good book for any hardcore fan of the Duniverse, with Deleted/Extended Scenes, letters and a "What If?" Dune based on Frank Herbert's notes. It won't take your breath away, nor is it as fascinating as the holy grail that is the unoffical, out-of-print Dune Encyclopedia. But if you're desperate for more Dune, here it is.

I have been a huge fan of Dune for almost 30 years and have read the 6 books by Frank Herbert so many times that I have lost count. I purchased this hoping for some insight into the creation of the Dune masterpiece and was deeply disappointed. The book includes some letters between Frank Herbert and publishers etc, which were mildly interesting and some deleted scenes and alternative chapters for Dune and Dune Messiah, which were worth a read. The preface by Bill Ransom was excellent. The bulk of the book contains short stories by Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson and a short novella that is claimed to be written from Frank Herberts original plans for Dune. At the end of it all I could only conclude that, as an author, Brian Herbert is unfit to tie his fathers shoelaces. "Spice Planet" was abyssmal beyond belief.

A melange of Dune scraps
Such a mixed bag of things, and one for the Dune fan (like me) only. Some interesting background material, but let down by Herbert jnr and the wretched Anderson's scrawlings. Read more

Not essencial, but it's worth it.
Well, not all the books have so many versions as the world of Tolkien, and this book shows you how would be Dune without the collaboration in previous drafts.
