Review

"In some ways The River House reads like a suspense novel written by Richard Yates. Leroy elucidates Ginnie's moral conundrum beautifully." - Washington Post "Leroy expertly draws a picture of a woman and a family in crisis and the moral questions one sometimes has to face." - Toronto Sun "Margaret Leroy writes like a dream" - Tony Parsons"

Product Description

Would you reveal a secret that might solve a murder but would ruin your life? Ginnie Holmes has found something she never intended to find - an overwhelming passion for a man she should not be with. And they have found somewhere to meet - an abandoned boathouse hidden on the riverbank of the Thames. Then, in a single terrifying event, the lovers' secret becomes a deadly catastrophe. A woman is found murdered at the river's edge, just near the river house. And Ginnie finds herself in the path of extraordinary danger, not only facing the exposure and grief that she has feared, but endangering herself and everyone she loves.

Loved it ... 23 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Ginnie Holmes is used to dealing with difficult dilemmas, her role as a child psychologist means that she works with vulnerable children, and when one troubled child brings her into contact with Detective Inspector Will Hampden, she is unprepared for the effect that this meeting will have on her life. The sexual attraction between Ginnie and Will is instantaneous and powerful, their illicit weekly meetings at an old boat house on the river Thames will have disastrous consequences for them both, and eventually forces Ginnie into making a very difficult decision.

This book pulls you in from the very beginning- it explores the nuance of infidelity very well, and keeps the momentum of the story from start to finish...Ginnie's relationship with her teenage daughter Amber is particularly well done.

A moral dilemma 18 April 2012
By Rossi
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm not overly keen on the middle aged adultery theme as it generally runs along the same course - the woman has a husband who neglects her (in this case emotionally) and her children no longer need her. Enter ruggedly handsome professional male and the next thing you know, the eyes have glazed over and the tights are off. This book checks all of those boxes. A nice idea, but I felt it would have been better as a short story as it seemed overly padded out with mundane issues such what was for dinner, Ginnie's choir reunion and coping with her teenager doing shockingly normal teenager things. I did hope that the sub-plot of the murder by the river would take over the story, but it's really about a moral dilemma.

Still, putting all those issues aside and three quarters through, the book takes off and the pages really start to turn and it ends quite well. It's just a little slow and predictable in places.

An easy synner read 31 July 2011
By Dusty
Format:Paperback
This was one of our book club's recommendations and the first of Margaret Leroy's book that I have read. I felt it lost its way a bit but I thought the main character was good and she didn't disappoint at the end. An easy summer read.
