After many years of rejecting anything remotely domestic I tried my hand at some baking from one of Hugh's recipes. It turned out amazingly well and emboldened me to attempt some other recipes I had seen. A few years on I'm a river cottage addict, everything I try turns out well.

When I saw these books I was a little dubious, while there is an intro from Hugh and the authors are all affiliated with river cottage, I wasn't sure how well I would get on with them.

The set includes some foraging guides that I have yet to try, however everything seems clear and easy to follow. I have tried several of the cake recipes with great success and have just bought some equipment to try my hand at preserving. The veg patch guide was fantastic and has given me lots of inspiration on how to expand on my small collection of tomatoes, strawberries and herbs next year!

I think these books will be of interest to anybody interested in the river cottage lifestyle whether complete beginner like myself, or somebody looking for new ideas.

The books themselves are not hardback, but use a thicker coated card-like material than normal paperbacks. They clean up well after an over enthusiastic splatter, although I promise nothing with the preserves! The hardbacks look lovely but all in all I feel this set is great value for money, looks great in the shelf and I'm really happy with them.

If you are interested in buying this product you are already familiar with the content so I will deal only with the books themselves.

With the individual books only available in hard back at £14.99 each I was instantly attracted to this item. When I received it I was very pleased to find that although soft back the covers have a really durable plastic coating. The case is nicely robust and unlike others I have the books aren't wedged in so tightly that they don't go back once the spine has been broken.

Very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to any other river cottage fans.

These books are great, I really only wanted the preserves one but it was such good value for the set that I bought it. So far I've used the preserving, bread making, foraging and baking ones. Theyre clearly laid out and very useful.

An encyclopaedic wonderland of recipes and helpful information. LOVE!!! The veg book and the preserves one are my absolute favourites, but they all have great content.

This is a great reference library. The books are soft cover but are good quality with beautiful photos. I loved the fact they didn't just focus on common and garden fruit and veg but also include a number if unusual foraging recipes. I have already tried making the beech tree leaf noyeau (an alcoholic drink) now I just have to wait 6 months before I can drink it!!

The advert says the original price per book was £14.99, yet that was the price for the hardback edition, I have never seen a paperback edition.
This does not detract from the content which is still fantastic, no matter what the cover.
Happy reading.
Paul

This book series comes in a hard boxed set to protect your books. The print and book quality are second to none, and considering the price of the hard back books, I would choose these over them any day. Extremely happy, thank you..

I bought this book for my Dad as he was retiring and subsequently had a lot of time on his hands. The books have a lot of recipies for cooking and preparing various ingredients, but also has a focus on the collection of ingredients, through foraging, fishing, etc. There are also sections which could be approximated to a 'science' bit, which appealed to my Dad, explaining bits of biology, species idenfication, and so on. As a result, my Dad and I spend a lot of time reading it out of interest, instead of purely for cooking.

To summarise: Expected interesting cookery book, got detailed handbooks pertaining to all aspects of food preparation and cooking, with interesting science bits to boot.
