Product Description

Product Description

This is a retrospective view, since the mid-1960s, of the work of Raghubir Singh, one of India's greatest photographers. Published to mark the occasion of an exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, it contains images of India, with an introduction by Singh and quotations by India's best-known writers. Since the 1960s, Singh has roamed far and wide across the vast expanses of India, from the source of the Ganges and the ghats of Benares, to Bombay and the Himalayas. In his introduction, he explains what India means to him - focusing in particular on colour. Arranged in 11 thematic sections, the images capture the sights and smells of streetlife, monuments and pilgrims to create a comprehensive picture of daily life in India.

I've recently been to this wonderful country called India. This book brought my memories back again: the bright colours, the light, the alive and chaotic cities, its buzzing, the amazing eyes of the Indian people, even the smell of the country. I was deeply moved by Singh's photographs and his talent to capture those unforgettable moments.

Now I only have one desire: to go back to India!

A truly beautiful book. Fantastic colourful images that are so evocative you can almost feel the heat of India coming off the pages.

The photos in this book are wonderful. When you see India through Singh's photos, the country appears magical, colourful and intensely beautiful. He shows us in his photos what Narayan suggests, the lively, but not idealised, India of which Kipling merely gives a lukewarm caricature. You can linger for hours in a world of Saddhus and floods and flowery processions...
