Review

'After years of neglect, Sheridan's 1775 comic masterpiece is coming back into fashion.' Michael Billington, Guardian, 14.9.10 'delightful comedy' Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraph, 14.9.10 'the real pleasure of this play is in the characters, none more so than Mrs Malaprop, whose glorious abuse of the language instantly passed into the English bloodstream.' Georgina Brown, Mail on Sunday, 19.9.10 'This is one of those great Irish comedies that make their home in the English theatre, sending up English life with affectionate relish.' John Peter, Sunday Times, 19.9.10 'Sheridan's play is about the gap between the need for maturity and the immaturity of people who feed their feelings with semi-romantic fantasies.' John Peter, Sunday Times, 19.9.10 'Wonderfully rich and elegant comedy is accompanied by sudden glimpses of deeper emotion' Daily Telegraph - Charles Spencer, 24.11.10

Product Description

"The Rivals" was Richard Brinsley Sheridan's first play and while at first it was not well received it would go on to prove to be a great success and establish Sheridan as a major talent. "The Rivals" satirizes the pretentiousness of English society in the late 18th century. As witty and accessible today as when it was first written, "The Rivals" sparkles with the humor that Sheridan and his writing are known for.

An acquired taste 4 Dec 2004
Format:Paperback
This is a comedy, but at first it is quite hard to grasp this point. However, get used to the language and the fact that things will sound differently to how they read and you'll be laughing out loud. Add to this the ultra-comprehensive notes that come with this addition and you have quite a valuable package. Not to everyone's taste however.

This is just what you need if your studying english and this is one of the texts your required to analize. There is a few added extras at the beginning, such as character profiles, author profile and a history of bath etc

Generally a really useful copy of the play. It's really quite funny too.

Highly recommended for the academic or anyone who loves comedy.

This edition of the play is very useful.I found the introduction relevent and useful towards my college course and the play itself hilarious and witty. The charcters are all very deep and this is an excellent example of a romantic, comedy.
