5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film 7 July 2010
Working in the world of those with learning disabilities I approached this film when released with great caution after reading the reviews of The American Downs Syndrome Association and Mencap in the UK, so I gave it a wide berth vowing never to watch it.

Whilst working on a project in relation towards those with a learning disability being accepted in the Paralympics in 2012 I was pointed in the films direction again to clear up a point on Special Olympics.

At first I sat and cringed as only Brian Cox can make you, but then relised that this has got to be the best film ever about those with special needs.

If you are not in the scene you won't enjoy it, you will be totally upset and if you are PC, your foot will be going through the TV screen big style, however, if you work in that world you will suddenly get to the point (which is not that far into the film) where you realise that you are entering scenes and watching situations that you have come across with those you work with, once your there the humour starts and never lets up

The 'ice cream' comment has to be the funniest line ever mentioned on the big screen, the disco at the end of the games when the athletes gather round the with the group is sing spot on, but again you got to part of their world to understand where they are coming from and to sit back, laugh out loud and really enjoy it

Not good for loads of folks, certainly not for the weak hearted or the PC brigade, but on the other foot, it's what you make it, which for me total cinema magic!!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome! 31 Aug 2006
This film is one of the best comedy films i have ever seen.

Its made by the same people that made dumb and dumber so you know its going to be really funny if its by the same people. Ill admit when i seen a preview on GMTV last year i thought it was going to be kind of lame. but man i was wrong.

The character jeffy is superbly played by Johnny Knoxville. His Character will have you up in stitches of luaghs. And the other characters are soo funny.

This is a film you can watch in the morning, then watch at night in the same day and you will find it even funnier at night.

If you dont have a good sense of humour or you're not very open minded or you're not very got with gettin jokes quikly then this film is'nt for you as its a film you can't take to seriously and alot of the funny bits happen quikly. so you have to keep your eyes open to truely enjoy this film!

give him a starvy wave!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly few laughs. 19 July 2010
By Ernie TOP 1000 REVIEWER
'The Ringer' has some genuinely funny laugh out loud moments; the trouble is there's too few of them and between the occasional laughs is a predictable story which after watching the first 15 minutes you'll kinda know how it's going to end. Johnny Knoxville does a fairly good job overall, but apart from a couple of slapstick moments and due to the lacklustre scrip he's never really that funny.
What saved the film for me were the great performances from 'Edward Barbanell' and 'Brian Cox'. Cox, despite a slightly dodgy American accent, was very funny as the unscrupulous gambling addicted 'Uncle Gary' and Edward Barbanell as 'Billy' had some of the films best lines and pretty much stole every scene he was in.
Overall, 'The Ringer' is a film which despite its subject matter, lets itself down due to a weak script which plays it way to safe and ends up warm, fuzzy and clichéd. If it had been Adam Sandler in the lead role it could have got away it, Knoxville however would have been better served with a less sentimental, much edgier and funnier script.
If you're a fan of Adam Sandler films like 'Happy Gilmore', 'Mr Deeds' and 'The Waterboy' then you'll probably like 'The Ringer'. Though if you're expecting a Farrelly Brothers style comedy along the lines of 'Dumb & Dumber', 'Kingpin' or 'Me, Myself & Irene' then chances are you'll be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars WAIT! Not what you think. 1 Aug 2008
By Chris Morse VINE VOICE
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
A few years old now this film, but after watching it last night with the kids it deserves a mention.

If there was ever a story that could be disasterous it's this. The synopsis is this:

Knoxville, who I dont particularly rate as an actor, especially after he was one of those responsible for trying to ruin all that was good about The Dukes Of Hazzard. Anyway, he plays Steve, a bit of an office loser who as the film starts is listening to self help motivational tapes at work. The result is he goes to his boss to ask for more responsibility...which he gets in the form of having to fire the janitor, a very sweet old man called Stavvi. Steve just can't do this so instead offers him a job cutting grass at his home complex. What happens next happens quickly, as Stavvi is trying to cut the lawn with the clapped out mower, he leans down to fix it and has 3 of his fingers cut off by the blade. At the hospital, without insurance, Steve has to pay $28'000 if Stavvi is to keep his fingers. After an attempt to borrow money from his loser uncle, a gambler, his uncle hits upon an idea to solve all their money issues...rig the Special Olympics.

As said, if ever there was a film with the potential to be completeley politically uncorrect, this film was it. That it managed to steer well clear of any type of sentiment like that is amazing, but what you see is one of the most warm hearted, endeering, funny and thought provoking movies I've seen in a long time.

As Steve goes under cover at the Special olympics as a mentally challenged man called Geoffey he very quickly learns that the other athletes, real mentally challenged people, not only deserve his respect and honesty but eventually deserve a lot more than he has on offer.
