Book Description

The fifth volume of Dorothy Dunnett's bestselling series exploring the intricacies of sixteenth century history through the exploits of soldier of fortune Francis Crawford of Lymond. From the silken palace of Suleiman the Magnificent to the barbaric court of Ivan the Terrible: Lymond is bound for Russia, where he fights his way to a position second only to the young Tsar himself. It is a world away from his homeland, now sheltering Philippa Somerville, his wife in name only, and the childthey rescued in Constantinople. Forced to return as the Tsar's envoy to the intrigue of Mary Tudor's court, Lymond must face with the truth of his relationship with his bride, and also the implacable hostility of his old enemy Margaret Douglas.

Lymond leaves Europe behind and goes to Russia with the expensive, ambitious and very beautiful courtesan who rescued him at the end of the last book. There he makes himself indispensable to the young and increasingly mad Tsar, Ivan (the Terrible). The men of St Mary's come to join him and they too are shocked at what Lymond is turning himself into - a man as cold, icy and frigid as the Russian landscape itself.

But then an English trade company come out to Russia and Lymond is forced to return with them to London, where the mysteries of his parentage are forced upon him and even he is forced to engage with human emotions again.

Startling, shocking and utterly compelling, it's almost impossible to believe that Dunneett could ever write anything better.

In this novel you will learn much about 16th century Russia under Ivan The Terrible - Grand Prince Ivan Vasilievich, Duke of Muscovy and Tsar of all Russia. Each character is a real person alive at the time and Ms Dunnett creates the most terrifying of atmospheres while her one created character, Francis Crawford of Lymond and Comte de Sevigny, shows himself capable of becoming the Voeveda (General) of Russia, trusted, loved and admired by an unstable monarch with unlimited powers. Encouched with his much adored courtesan, Güzel, Francis does nothing to end his marriage to Philippa Somerville, who has emerged from her stay in the Harem of the Turk as virginally as she entered it, and is currently fending off Spanish and English attentions as a lady's maid to Bloody Mary. The Queen is busy rooting out and burning heretics, though her husband, King Phillip has advised cessation.

On his return a hazardous sea journey leaves Lymond's ship wrecked on the Scottish coast. Yet even when he returns having helped establish a trading treaty between England and Russia, bringing a Russian Ambassador with him, (though not all of the merchants manage to make it back) he is immediately in danger from the schemes of Margaret Lennox, a petitioner at the court of Bloody Mary. At various times we are given clues and teasers to the truth of which of the two boys (one of whom is now dead) is the son of Lymond. Both that parentage and Lymond's own, is to await the denouement. Lymond, along the way, appears to have fallen in love with Phillippa (at last!), though he is fighting any acknowledgement of this both publicly and privately. John Dee has done Lymond's horoscope and it seems he is not fated to return to Russia, which is his intention.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I would give it a hundred if I could 17 Feb. 2014

I read this series back in the 70's (library books) , then again in the late 90's (paperbacks) and now I'm retired and reading it all again on my Kindle. I can't believe how many twists and turns I had forgotten. Wonderful, wonderful story with an historical basis so very plausible. I love the characters, the descriptions of everything, the woven story - magical and majestic. You need to start at the beginning with The Game of Kings though - not this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best book in the series 4 Dec. 2006
    Format:Paperback
Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles are an epic achievement, in terms of research, scope as well as gripping narrative. "The Ringed Castle", however, is one of the best books in the series (next to Game of Kings and Checkmate). This is due in part to her fabulous depiction of Russia, a fledgling nation in an all but fledgling environment. The humbling landscape of ice deserts and primeval forests is a superb backdrop to the struggles of these hearty, savage people and their tragic, gifted tsar. Then there is the continued mystery of Lymond himself. Although we feel we know most everything about him - his age, his haunted past - Dunnett still bewilders us with his behavior. We have to start over again as we try to understand the changes in his character. Parallel to to the swashbuckling and continent-sweeping intrigue, Dunnett sets the stage for the finale in this singular man's emotional odyssey. And she brings another character to maturity, whom we all have watched with interest; Phillippa comes into her own in this book, unconsciously wielding a power far greater than she or we anticipated.

This book has a certain place in the series, so don't read it out of hand - but look forward to it!

Why Dunnett is not a household name I dont know,!
So erudite, educational with superb plotting and wonderful characters.. way ahead of its time in the historical fiction stakes.
knocks other more recent historical fiction authors into a cocked hat.

    Love ALL of her work.

I have been a fan of Dorothy Dunnett's books for many years. This was a kindle purchase, to supplement the "real" edition I already own. Some of the typesetting is a little weird, but that's kindle for you. The book itself is wonderful.
