More About the Author

Richard D North, 66, is a writer, broadcaster and commentator.

His latest work, "The Right-wing Guide to Nearly Everything", is available as an eBook in Kindle on Amazon.

It's "a brilliant idea", according to the historian of empire and money, Niall Ferguson. Andrew Roberts, the historian of nearly everything else, says the book is "Witty, hard-hitting, accurate and immensely politically sound". Ruth Porter, of the Institute of Economic Affairs, says: "Informative and thought-provoking, this book will make you gasp in outrage and chuckle in delight."

"I aim to show people how the right-wing view of the world is surprising and varied and above all, valuable", says RDN. "The right-winger is a realist, and doesn't believe in Utopian fantasies. There have been some scary right-wingers, just as there have been some scary socialists. But believing in a small state and in strong individuals living in a strong society - that's hardly a vicious creed."

RDN is planning a one-man show based on the eBook.

RDN is fellow of the Social Affairs Unit, the home of conservative cultural thought, and media fellow of the Institute of Economic Affairs, the free market think tank.

RDN's "Mr Cameron's Makeover Politics: Or why old Tory stories matter to us all" was first published by the SAU in October, 2009 and is available on Kindle. Other RDN/SAU titles are due to follow.

These include: "'Scrap the BBC!': Ten years to set broadcasting free" (SAU, 2007); "Mr Blair's Messiah Politics: Or what happened when Bambi tried to save the world" (SAU, 2006); "Rich Is Beautiful: A very personal defence of Mass Affluence" (SAU, 2005).

RDN's "Life On a Modern Planet: A manifesto for progress" (Manchester University Press, 1995) will be on Kindle soon.

In the late 80's RDN was the Independent's (and then the Sunday Times') environment and Third World development columnist.

He periodically appears on The Big Questions, Sunday Morning Live, Today, Newsnight, The Moral Maze, the Jeremy Vine Show, Channel 4 News and Sky TV, as a defender of capitalism, globalisation, representative Democracy and any other topic where the soft left liberal green orthodoxy needs to be challenged.

5.0 out of 5 stars Right On 20 Nov 2012

Amusing and thoroughly thought-provoking.. makes one realise that ideas, coupled with realism (and healthy doses of wit), usually end up as what you would describe as 'right wing.' As this book so wonderfully demonstrates this is a term that should not simply be dismissed as unpleasant or for ageing fascists. Excellent reading for all inquisitive minds.

The Right wing Guide to Nearly Everything‏ is exactly what it says on the cover. This guide is funny and scary at the same time, letting you into the mind of the right wing. A great book for just diving into as you can pick and choose chapters at your leisure. Great fun with a message

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, easily navigable, provocative 6 May 2013

I loved it. So accessible, blunt, well-written. Given what is out there on the market, it also provides a smooth, graceful read. And not lacking in humour. A nice antidote to pious, self-righteous, self-congratulatory Leftist nonsense...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a complete waste of time 12 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
From the Daily Mail "Attention to political truth" school of thought this book is crammed full of half truths, non truths and bland statements that purport to be true. However, it does show the mind of the right wing thinker warts and all.

Descriptions of the Left wing were funny cartoon images of the right's impression of the Left but has little to do with reality. I shall cherish this book as it reflects my own view of the Right from my personal perspective. As we all know anything that underlines your own bias must be good. That is precisely where this book hits the mark with the Right. However it is also a useful read for the Left.

For the Right it justifies all pre-conceived impressions and underlines Right wing biased view of the world making them feel secure and cosy away from the harshness of reality. It is full of simplistic solutions to complex issues normally labeled incorrectly as "common sense"

For the Left it demonstrates the illogical thinking and weird kind of twisted logic that has to be overcome in debate with the Right. It should therefore be an essential read for all Left wing political activists.

As a tool for clear political thought and reasoned argument this book is not it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Funny 9 Nov 2012

No matter what your political views, this book is an absolute must-read. Prepare to be enlightened, surprised, provoked and amused. The author has unsurpassed cultural intelligence (but he is famous for that) and conveys, in a light-hearted but very poignant way, how many people think and form opinions. I love how the book is structured too - alphabetically. It makes for fun reading out loud to your family and friends. In fact, guess what everyone is getting in their Christmas stocking this year?
