Product Description

Everyone, including Guy Mullins, thought that when he and Liz got married she had found the right man. But somehow, somewhere along the way, things had gone wrong, and he was suddenly aware that he had gone straight from adolescence to mid-life crisis without a pause for the prime of life.

The man tried to do right, but everything went wrong. This is a tale set in the land of London show business, where the right men are eaten for breakfast and the wrong women rule the roost. The more our sad hero, Guy Mullins tries to help, the more he loses. This hilarious romp through therapy weekends and tempermantal artistes, addresses emotional and gender issues. With references to trees and tree surgeons, myths and dreams of drowning green men, Planer beautifully conveys the true muddle of our times. I laughed out aloud several times, especially when a fat man is trying to hold a stork-like pose to reach his inner child. Its a dammed good read.

I must confess that I didn't enjoy this much at all. Set in the world of actors and theatrical agents I struggled to find a single likeable character in the whole book. It reads like a master-class in selfishness.

There are occasional amusing moments, but there's a feeling of despair running through the book that makes it very depressing in places.

There are several in-jokes from the author eg his main character complaining about comedy actors turning their hands to writing books, several name checks of people that Nigel Planer has worked with, etc and I suspect there were more in there that I didn't pick up on. I got the feeling that he enjoyed writing it a lot more than I enjoyed reading it. People who have liked reading recent Tony Parsons books might like this. I didn't.

brilliantly funny,The Right Man gives you insight into life for the modern man. The hero, Guy Mullins, has given up trying to be nice to everyone as it has only done him harm. A subversive look at the new man in the 90's, sometimes Planer touches you in the most extraordinary of places.
