Product Description

Product Description

In this companion volume to the popular 'Scotland's Mountain Ridges' Dan Bailey offers a passionate introduction to summer scrambles, technical rock routes and challenging winter climbs on ridges in the Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District, Exmoor, Cornwall, the Isle of Wight, Kerry and Connemara. In 48 routes, he covers a host of popular classics and obscure gems, from Sharp Edge to Skeleton Ridge and from Mynydd Mawr to the MacGillycuddy's Reeks Ridge Traverse. With inspirational photographs, Ordnance Survey map extracts and topo diagrams, this book is both a celebration of the landscape and a practical route guide and features a climbing glossary for walkers and scramblers coming new to the subject.

This is an excellent guide to ridges for England, Wales and Ireland. There is plenty in here for both beginners and more experienced climbers. All the classics are covered and the routes described are all high quality with plenty of photos to bring the descriptions to life. There are OS map excerpts shown for each route which is a nice touch. Routes for summer and winter are covered.

Like all Dan's books, the writing is light hearted with a sense of personality, yet clear and detailed. If ridges are your thing, or you want to take your hiking to the next level in the UK, this is a great guide to help light the way.

After purchasing and regularly using Dan Bailey's last book - Scotland's Mountain ridges - I was quite keen to get my hands on this new book covering the rest of Britain+Ireland. It's really good. I love the varied places he's found ridges to climb, there's even found one on The Isle of White.
The photographs and route descriptions are high quality and he really gets across his enthusiasm for adventure (I've noticed this in his Trail mag routes too) he isn't just going through the motions, this guy must love the outdoors. What else can I say, if you love scrambling and the outdoors then try either/both of Bailey's ridge books, you'll end up on an adventure in some place you'd never expect. 11/10

A Useful Guide 3 Aug 2009

I have many guide books already but this one did identify more scrambling routes in England and Wales, and in addition gave more information on routes covered elsewhere. I found it particularly informative about ridges in Ireland as I'm not aware of these being covered in such detail elsewhere.
