Lots of books to review here. I confess I have only just completed the first one "King Solomons Mines" It is 50 years since I last read this book and enjoyed it just as much now as then. Somewhat dated and can only be described as Politically Incorrect but does reflect British views when we raised heroes, good spellers and ruled an empire. This omnibus represents excellent value I have 49 books to go and politically my views might well vere to BNP unless I find some more liberal reading material. This is hardly likely as I have just downloaded a Rudyard Kipling omnibus. Will end here as I have to go and hoist the Union Jack on my roof flag pole. Happy Reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Masterpiece 11 Jun 2011

Mr. Wareham hadn't read 'King Solomon's Mines' for 50 years & that goes for 'Nada the Lily' as regards myself. I've looked for it in vain in recent years & jumped at the chance of getting it on Kindle.
So what''s so good about it? White men scarcely appear and it's a novel set against the zenith of Zulu power under Chaka. Rider-Haggard writes synpathetically about that great people but doesn't stint at the wickedness of the tyranny of Chaka and his much weaker brother, Dingaan. Umslopogass is outsnading as the hero - those who know him from 'She' or other Quartermain books will see him here as a youth (compare Chingachgook as he appears in 'Deerslayer' with as he appears in later 'Leatherstocking Tales' of Fenimore-Cooper. The story is told through his uncle, Mopo (a fictional intriguer in Zulu poltics) & concentrates on the love of 'the Woodpecker' and Nada the Lily, so beautiful that she wreaks destruction on their world.

The novel's language is quaint in the garrulous style of an African story-teller. The slips in scanning are amusing rather than irritating. Much more important is that, via Kindle, a much-neglected masterpiece is again available. I consider it on a par with the Alan Quartermain books. Where it scores is how it blends GENUINE history (e.g.Chaka's revenge against the Langene tribe) with pure fiction. In that it's as good as the Claudius Books by Robert Graves which also intrigued me as a teenage lover of History.

Enjoy a truly great novel - surely an inspiration for writers like Wilbur Smith.

3.0 out of 5 stars series not complete 29 July 2011
The She series begins with the novel "Wisdom's Daughter" - the story of Ayesha's origins as told by herself. It does not appear to be included here.
