Biography

Spend a day with Thievery Corporation’s Eric Hilton and Rob Garza and you might hear them make reference to David Cope, the university professor who studies music and artificial intelligence, or mention Garza’s travels to Sudan and Nepal, or explain why The Clash’s London Calling may just be the best-produced album in rock history. So it’s not surprising that Hilton and ... Read more in Amazon's Thievery Corporation Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

The Richest Man In Babylon is the third full-length record from Thievery Corporation and finds this atmospheric Washington DC-based electronica duo indulging their esoteric chill-out impulses, blending far-flung world-music influences into a slick, high-production trip-hop cocktail. With an emphasis on keeping it organic, Thievery Corporation boast a radically different sound to their sterile, mechanical-sounding peers: "The Outernationalist" wraps its ethereal electronic synthplay in dub-tinged passages of trippy Rastfari mysticism, while "Facing East" blends wailing Bhangra vocals and whirling sitars into a hypnotic, downotempo whole. They're not exactly on the cutting-edge of this sort of thing--"Un Simple Histoire" and "All That We Perceive" could easily have slipped neatly onto Air's Moon Safari, while the rolling brass of "Liberation Front" bears an uncanny resemblance to Nightmares on Wax circa Car Boot Soul. But like the greatest bits of DJ Shadow's The Private Press, it's often hard to say exactly how these complex, soulful tracks were pieced together in the soulless environment of the studio. It's a cool, impressive achievement. --Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Another album that will please Thievery C. fans 10 Oct 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
'The Richest Main In Babylon' is another example of how good Thievery C. are at what they are doing. This album is very similar to all others they have made in the past, but it is different enough to make it interesting. Songs are mellow, sensual, and show great skill. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton are obviously influenced by many musical styles (dub, reggae, bossa, latin, eastern oriented music, etc.), yet their albums are very cohesive and flow nicely from beginning to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars World Music at its Best 5 Mar 2004
Format:Audio CD
Washington DC's dapper downbeat duo Thievery Corporation have been pimping some of the genre's most finely-tailored grooves for quite some time now, and have joined Kruder & Dorfmeister and a handful of others at the top of the "downbeat" field.

Their new album is another wicked blend of worldly beats and pieces, with an international cast of vocalists (including dreamy Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini, Jamaican deejay Shinehead and others) adding authenticity to this cruisey cocktail of Eastern, African, Jamaican and loungey European influences. Superbly packaged with a book of photojournalists' images from all around the globe, 'The Richest Man In Babylon' will take you on a hi-fi journey around the world in 57 minutes without having to leave the comfort of your own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Princes of Thievery 19 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
My first foray into Thievery Corporation certainly won't be my last. A chance purchase after listening to a few sample tracks that sounded promising. On listening to the album in full, I'm convinced I've unearthed a true gem of global chill. Glorious production and some scintillating world inspired sounds, make this a truly classy cup of chill for the more discerning chill-meister. Maybe not revolutionary, but a refreshing mix of beats and blends that this genre has been crying out for. Top drawer.
