Product Description

World War II mini-series thriller based on the Robert Ludlum novel. American spy David Spaulding (Stephen Collins) is sent to Argentina to oversee the receipt of valuable gyroscopes, crucial to the war effort, from a Jewish industrialist. What he hasn't been told however, is that in exchange for the gyroscopes, which emanate from Germany, the US is in return supplying industrial diamonds to their enemy. When a Jewish militant group informs Spaulding about the real reason for the exchange, which will ultimately aid German rocket development, he sets out to sabotage the meeting with the help of his Jewish colleagues.

By Mr. Stephen Kennedy TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A 70's mini series telling one of Robert Ludlum's more complex novels, this passes muster, with the then reasonably lavish budget (by TV standards) helping overcome the ravages of age.
Stephen Collins plays an agent caught up in the wartime titular exchange between the Germans and the Americans of gyroscope technology and diamonds. The plot is dense, and the director does not help by making the proceedings rather long winded. Indeed, the pace is languorous at best - however the stellar cast and location shooting help keep your flagging interest going. The music is cheesy and the script clunky, but there is a decent enough story in there to just about make it worth keep watching, despite the director's best efforts to send you to sleep.
It's a two star effort, despite some interesting character actors (John Huston , Claude Akins, Rene Auberjonois for example) Let's face it, the only reason this got re-Bourne is because Ludlum's more famous movie trilogy just came to an end.
Still, worth rewatching if you have the patience for over 4 hours worth of 70's mini series. If you really want to watch some mini series action with more in the gravitas, realism and style departments, try Winds of War instead, it's far superior.

2.0 out of 5 stars A POOR TRANSFER 20 Mar 2013

Even this is not a very good mini-series, its has been made even worse by the poor quality of the Why bother doing it? source material.

3.0 out of 5 stars To Exchange or not to Exchange. 11 Mar 2013
By j.r
Format:DVD
The Rhinemann Exchange is a 5 part mini series. It stars Stephan Collins and features famous actors such as Jose Ferrer, Larry Hagman and Roddy McDowell. The programme itself is quite slow moving, especially parts 1 and 2, but the last three parts pick up the pace and the ending is fairly action packed. Nothing about the series is that convincing but it does tell a good spy story with some twists and turns. The DVD quality isn't perfect in both sound and picture, but it's good enough. You'd almost definately be better off reading the book, but if you've got about four or so hours to spare and you like spy stories and classic television then give this DVD set a go.
