5.0 out of 5 stars I just love the science! 20 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought into A.Reynolds after I'd finished reading everything by Iain Banks and Peter Hamilton. I tend to prefer the tone of British authors as they are less sensational and have a particular humour :) So tragic was the loss of Mr Banks, I was absolutely gutted by the fact that I'd never read another Culture novel...selfish, I know but gutted nonetheless.
I recall a Google hangout I was part of, around February 2013 (iirc), Banks, Hamilton and Reynolds hosted. All 3 of them gave over so much of their writing character, I knew then that I would read Mr Reynolds' books even with a few of Peter Hamilton's still to get through. So, in time, I did a cursory bit of research on Alastair soon as I discovered he used to work as an astrophysicist for the European Space Agency I was sold. You just don't get better credentials than that in my opinion, that IS better than a MA in English Literature as far as I - as a massive fan of Science Fiction writing - am concerned. I have not been disappointed so far, the Revelation Space universe (which I believe is set in our actual near galaxy) is wonderfully conceived and executed with finesse. The factions into which the human race has split are very believable and, like I say, the scientific ideas underpinning the technologies which drive the story arcs are second to none.

If you are looking for a new sci-fi author to read and enjoyed Banks/ this now!

3.0 out of 5 stars A good collection - a forced ending. 3 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Let me start by saying that this is a very hefty collection, and while the price might seem a little steep for an ebook, You are actually getting good value for money.
I enjoyed the books and found the way the books often referenced each other to be pleasing. I did however find the main story line to be cut short. The author goes into excellent detail of the wider universe he writes about, and then wraps everything from the previous 4 books up in one very short chapter! Maybe this just let me feeling short changed. The writing style is easy to read for the main books, but I got the sense that the short novellas added to the collection were part of the authors earlier attempts at writing, and lacked the skill of the other books.

I gave this collection three stars because I felt the main story had a lot more juice left in it and after reading the large collection I felt I deserved a better conclusion the main story ark!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes great, most times simply very good SF 8 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a mammoth read. All the books in one pack. Sometimes great, most times simply very good SF. Sometimes slightly reminiscent of Dan Simmons Hyperion trilogy. I couldn't bring myself to interrupt the flow through these books by reading anything else in the middle of them (which says something about the flow of the stories). So they kept me company for a very long time!

3.0 out of 5 stars a huge set of books 1 Jan. 2014
By Texxy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this set of books all set in the same universe. Everything was perfect apart from the ending of the inhibitors war. To rush the ending in a couple of pages after so many books just ruined it and missed half the story.
