Is it Tony’s fault that the lady of the house where he’s field tested falls in love with him? - ROBOT AL was intended for shipment to a mining outfit on the moon. Instead, he’s loose in the mountains of Virginia…building from scraps of junk his very own, very dangerous disintegrator. - ROBOT LENNY answers workaday questions in babytalk. So why is Dr Susan Calvin, the world’s top robopsychologist, fascinated by this messed up specimen of an industrial robot?

THE THREE LAWS OF ROBOTICS

• A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm
• A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law
• A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law

Asimov does it again; in The Rest Of The Robots, sequel to the widely acclaimed and stunning book 'I, Robot', not only does this genius of an author manage to create whole new concepts of the future, but give them personalities all of their own: I am of course referring to the brain children of his work, the Robots. This collection of short stories proudly shows Asimov's understanding and sensitivity towards a minority that is often misunderstood by a society suffering from a 'Frankenstein Complex'. His creativity and imagination is unprecedented; he conjures up bizarre scenarios that involve the Three Laws of Robotics, yet when it seems that all hope is lost, he very neatly and effortlessly provides a simple answer to each problem. He not only teaches the reader about robots- he teaches them about themselves. Asimov's outlook on robotics is nothing but a reflection of society and that is what makes his works so interesting. Fans of Jonathan Creek and other mystery instalments will love his work for its intriguing plot-puzzles, psychologists will find many examples of human behaviour mimicked by robots, with just as many morals to be learned, whilst the sceptical ones amongst us will find many an outlook on the social and moral issues of robotics and science in general. Asimov's books are not just about robots and the scrapes they get into- they are designed to make us think and observe our own inhibitions and ourselves. Isn't it time we all took a lesson from Asimov? Pick up one of his books and decide yourself- I think you'll agree.

This is a collection of Asimov's robot short-stories, many of them aimed at testing his three laws of robotics.

This particular collection includes four Susan Calvin stories, of which my favourites were Lenny (which gives Calvin a robot child of her own) and Galley Slave (an ingenious look at a devious academic who is determined to discredit the use of robots). My favourite story in the collection though is Let's Get Together, a cold war story about a plot to use of human-like robots to take over the United States - it's truly ingenious and v. tense.

Considering that these stories were written between the 1940s and 1960s, it's not surprising that some of the technology is out of date, but the basic integrity of the stories and Asimov's use of mystery still holds the attention. In particular, I enjoy Asimov's spare use of prose - there's nothing flashy about his writing and the bare style makes it even easier to believe and Susan Calvin is one of the strongest female characters in science fiction - strong, cold and high-minded, she runs rings around every male she comes across.
