Cots and car seats, nappies and nurseries, babygros and booties... as any new parent will tell you, having a baby can be a costly business. In fact, according to a recent survey, the cost of raising a child is a staggering £186,000, pricier than buying a house.

But, having a baby need not mean financial ruin. Packed with inspirational and creative ideas for things to make at home, tried and tested recipes and tips, as well as activities and outings for you and your baby that won't cost a penny, The Resourceful Mum's Handbook is a must-have for every young family.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Resourceful Mum 11 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a really great read and wonderful reference guide for anyone, with a young family, who is watching the pennies. How I wish I'd had this to hand when I had my first baby. The baby industry is a booming business and the author really strips away all the gimmicks and offers a concise guide as to what the necessities are when having a baby. It's packed full of money-saving tips, including what to and what not to buy in terms of equipment. There are also loads of tasty recipes for quick meals and even household cleaning products. I also loved the bit about having a first birthday party on a budget. The book is divided into easy to refer to chapters and is interspersed with first-hand advice from mums who have the wonderful benefit of hindsight.
Several of the baby books I've read have been quite patronising. But I would say this hits the spot perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase 20 July 2009
Format:Paperback
We were tipped off about this book by one of our NCT classes, and we have already found it to be excellent. The tips on the "Essentials" are invaluable and it has meant that we haven't gone mad on items that we probably won't get the most use out of. Having soundbites from other mums about what they found useful works really well and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to make sure that they have a happy, healthy baby but without breaking the bank! This is our new Baby Bible!

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Reassuring 14 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I borrowed this book from the library when I found out I was pregnant, then bought a 2nd hand copy off Amazon. I knew nothing at all about babies, having never planned on having one or having any friends with kids.

I'm very into making my own things anyway, so loved the projects in the book, and the advice is well-presented, and lots of reviews and advice are quoted from Mums' experience, not just one person's opinion.

Useful from pregnancy, through birth and beyond; I find it reassuring when worried about something - it's usually covered in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" purchase for the new mum and dad 30 April 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book for my daughter who has just found out she is pregnant for the first time.Having glanced through it I couldn't put it down until it was finished it was so interesting and honest. I thoroughly endorse the previous reviews wholeheartedly. It is a minefield for new parents out there in the marketplace for baby products and it is easy to get carried away with the "ahh factor" and ultimately the high costs involved. The advice contained is an independent prospective from people that have been there other than possible constant advice from close family which can get tedious a times! (Personal experience!) My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed the book with all its variety of chapters. Highly recommended.

This was a very interesting book with plenty of new ideas and practical advice for mums to be and new mums. I bought this for a gift but ended up reading it myself, as a grandma myself I thought this was full of sound advice and good ideas.
