Product Description

Review

"[Griffith's] aim was to traslate the Greek text as if it were a conversation, and he has succeeded admirably." Library Journal

"In addition to a vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, the student and general reader will find many aids to comprehension in this volume: an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the body of the text; an analytical summary of the work's content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of important events; and a guide to further reading. The result is an accomplished and accessible edition of this seminal work, suitable for philosophers and classicists as well as historians of political thought at all levels." African Sun Times Review of Books --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

The late James Adam's edition of The Republic of Plato was published in 1902 and has long been out of print; it still remains among the most detailed and valuable critical editions available. D. A. Rees, Fellow and Tutor of Jesus College, Oxford, has written an introduction of 15,000 words for this edition. In it, he surveys Adam's work on The Republic and reviews subsequent work on the textual problems, language and meaning of the book. The book is divided into two volumes; Volume I. Introduction and Books I–V, and Volume II, printed here, Books VI–X and Indexes. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Format:Hardcover
In The Republic, Plato defines the basic structure of his ideal state, analysing it in some detail. [For more detail look to The Laws as a follow on]. But the work is not just about the external world. The famous cave analogy, is a strong visual metaphor for personal growth, and if you can conceptualise and internalise this work, it is a life changer!

Do not buy for study 4 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This edition does not contain the chapter numbers or stanza numbers so you cannot use this book in any essays or use it to follow lectures if the tutor is using a different edition (e.g. oxford, penguin, etc.)
I bought this because it was the cheapest, but I had to give it to charity and buy another copy that was easier to use.

Fantastic book 29 April 2012

Format:Paperback
The book is fantastic! While its contents are equally as amazing, this edition of this masterpiece is not only affordable, it is beautifully edited and published. I encourage people to purchase it as the price is fantastic and the reading itself is very rewarding.
