Book Description

"I can't kill Nazis if I'm dead. . ." Solomon Shalensky

After researching the World War II transcripts of the Nuremburg Trials and interviewing 'The Remnant' or Jewish survivors of the holocaust, many still living in Israel; Othniel Seiden was compelled to write their startling and remarkable stories of WWII in this historically accurate Jewish novel.

In this stunning and compelling WWII historical novel about the Jews who were able to remain free and fight, Seiden documents their survival, their suffering, their missions and their guerrilla warfare tactics against the Nazi occupation forces.

Also, well documented, the tragedy of Kiev and now infamous ravine of Babi Yar where it is thought that nearly a million people, Jews and non-Jews alike were massacred. These brave few escaped the certain death of their co-religionists by acts of bravery and sheer determination to live. The myth that the Jewish people 'went to their deaths like sheep to slaughter. . .' is put to rest forever in the stories of "The Remnant."

About the Author

Othniel J. Seiden, or Otti as he prefers being called, typically takes on an interesting historic subject and studies it to find the most fascinating storyline. When doing the research for 'The Remnant,' however, Otti found that it wasn t just one story, but the mixture of the stories of the survivors and their resistance work that really told the true story of the Free Jews of World War II and the part they played in bringing down the Third Reich. After researching the transcripts of the Nuremburg Trials and interviewing The Remnant or Jewish survivors of the holocaust; Otti was compelled to write their startling and remarkable stories of World War II while the remaining members of The Remnant were still alive. It is a stunning and compelling novel made of up the collection of stories of the Jews who were able to remain free and fight. Otti documents their escapes, their survival, their sacrifices, their suffering, their missions and their guerrilla warfare tactics against the Nazi occupation forces. Otti tells most of this story in the shadow of the atrocities of the now infamous Babi Yar ravine where it is thought that nearly a million people, Jews and non-Jews alike were massacred. Its existence was kept hidden for many years after the war by both the German and Russian interests. The brave few who escaped certain death here did so by acts of amazing bravery and sheer determination to live. Otti in this book, with these stories based on real people and historical transcripts, should dispel the myth that the Jewish people went to their deaths like sheep to slaughter... The Remnant and their incredible stories will erase that perception forever!

I have been talking to whoever will listen about many of the things I hadn't previously known concerning the massacre of Jews in the Ukraine and the amazing resistance of the tiny number who survived. The author pulls no punches over the role of the catholic church in the holocaust either. Nor does he have any kind words for Ukrainians who were Jew-haters, encouraged by their churches for generations before the Germans arrived. In fact he writes that the Jews initially welcomed the Germans as their saviours. The remnant survivors never called themselves partisans. They weren't fighting for the liberation of the country they found themselves in, they were fighting for survival. Period. Whilst all of the personal stories are unbelievably cruel and very painful to read, the author described one or two romantic scenes with an excessive amount of imaginary license for my liking (there was too much detail for it to have been witnessed or even later described in diaries). This rather spoilt for me what I believed otherwise was a faithfully told set of stories that made me very angry, and got me to think how I might have reacted under such circumstances. Could ignorance and bible-bashing intolerance let it all happen again one day? This book needs to be read by everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Remnant 17 April 2012

I am certainly glad I bought this book. Although sad or harrowing at times I always wanted to keep reading to see what would or could happen next. It did take a little getting into to begin with but once I had established in my mind who was who then the whole book flowed and was never dull or boring. Best read during the day not at night as I wouldnt have wanted to go to bed dreaming of the incidents from the story. The book did make me angry at times and at other times sad that people could do such cruel things in such a casual way. But then I was also cheered by the bravery and selflessness of others.

I read this book believing it was someone's memoirs , only on competition did I discover it was a novel. Nontheless I enjoyed it ,if you can say that about books on this subject. Worth reading if you are interested in the atrocities of World War 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Horror Story 31 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book demonstrates just how evil the Nazis were. The cold blooded indiscriminate murder of men, women and children. The heroic counter offences of those who were given the chance. The compicity of the catholic church with the Nazis during the holocaust and ultimately, the assistance that the Vatican gave to effect the Nazi officers escape. Truly unbelievable but truly true. Stephen King could not have dreamed up horror to this level. In fact he doesn't come close. Thanks Otti, from a gentile Christian.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting. 2 Jun. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The level of fear in these peoples lives. The strength they must have possessed to not just hang on to a sliver of life but to fight back against incredible odds. Absolutely astonishing what people have the will power to do against what surely must have seemed an insurmountable force.
