Product Description

Like many people Carla McKay thought that yoga sounded like a celebrity craze that was a bit too good to be true. Things changed, however, when a friend persuaded her to give it try for a laugh.
She did laugh – throughout the class. But the practice was also different from what she had expected. In The Reluctant Yogi she describes how her disbelief was defeated, and finds out from experts what yoga does for us. She discovers that research shows yoga has something for everyone of every shape and size, young to old: it will tone your body, calm your mind, make you sleep better, strengthen your bones, boost your immune system and even make you lose weight.
Learning her asanas from her pranayama, Carla finds along the way how you, too, can change your life with yoga.

I found this book to be really refreshing. Carla McKay's account of her introduction to Yoga is honest, funny and very relate-able. I found the history lesson fascinating, and those that want an accurate concise overview of the practise of Yoga will enjoy it too.

The most interesting theme within the book however, is her personal transition from total sceptic to full believer, the manner to which this is told had me laughing out load.

Ultimately this is a great little book that is packed with the facts you want, whilst telling a personal story in a really authentic way.

Well worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to identify with 30 Sep 2013

I got bored almost immediately with this book. I was hoping to read a story about how an unhealthy, exercise-disinclined individual (rather like myself) got into yoga. The protagonist begins her journey into yoga by... getting extensive plastic surgery and going on an expensive yoga retreat abroad? I'm not sure this really sends the message that yoga can be for anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reluctant Exerciser 16 April 2013
By Freddo
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Didn`t find it as informative as I would have wished regarding the basics of Yoga, although it could be the spur needed to actually `dip my toe in the water`.
Little too bogged down with phraseology - which the the uninformed - means little or nothing.
Still well worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars yogi Bore a Boo Boo 19 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is totally boring.
its a struggle to follow what I assume the writer feels is interesting or witty.
one minute its quoting facts and figures and then a personal view, neither very
relevant or interesting to a novice.
Far more enjoyable go to you tube and type in Yogi for beginners.

3.0 out of 5 stars A real persons view and experience of yoga 18 Jun 2013
By Miss
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am considering trying yoga. I have looked online and most information I find suggests that you will already have knowledge of yoga, or at least part of it.
This book was totally different.....It's written by a normal, British woman, who breaks down the jargon and the worries. She is reassuring, clear and honest. Explains the mystery and the history very well. I am inspired and an going to try it......what more can you ask for? It does what it says on the cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky is right
I liked the way this book takes a very tongue in cheek view of yoga - but is still very informative. Would it encourage me to practise yoga if I didn't already do so? Read more
